The secret of cod liver oil

-

COD liver oil has been used for centuries as a trusted household remedy. It is such a well-known and well-used family health supplement that many people do not realise it really does come from cod liver.

Cods store surplus energy in their livers. As a result, the liver can be quite a large organ – up to 40% of the cod’s total body weight and up to half of this can be oil.

These livers were traditionally discarded until the proven health benefits of the oil became known.

Trawler men now carefully separate out the livers when they are gutting the fish because of the value of the oil.

Cod liver oil has an enviable reputation as a health-promoting food, an impressive medical pedigree and a wealth of evidence, scientific and anecdotal, testifying to its value.

Cod liver oil’s earliest known use by the medical profession was in the 18th century, when it was used to treat bone diseases and rheumatism. Then, at the turn of the 20th century, doctors used it as a curative for rickets, a crippling bone disease that affected nine out of 10 children at the time.

Vitamin A and D It wasn’t until nutritional advances in the 20th century that these benefits of cod liver oil could be explained by the fact that it contains bone-building vitamin D as well as vitamin A and polyunsaturated fats.

Cod liver oil provides a natural source of vitamins A and D. Vitamin A is essential for the maintenance of healthy eyes and skin while vitamin D increases the uptake of calcium in the body and is a prerequisite for strong bones.

In addition, cod liver oil is rich in a special group of polyunsaturated fats known as Omega-3 – DHA and EPA.

These essential fatty acids help to maintain the body’s metabolism as well as maintain overall health. They are difficult to obtain in sufficient quantity in everyday foods.

This discovery led to doctors urging parents to give cod liver oil to their children for immune protection.

Growing demand led fishing trawler owners in the city of Hull in the United Kingdom to begin commercial production of cod liver oil. Together, they formed the original cod liver oil manufacturer now known as Seven Seas Limited.

Since 1935, Seven Seas has pioneered research and innovative production methods to provide high quality cod liver oil.

During the Second World War, Seven Seas Cod Liver Oil was distributed free to pregnant women and nursing mothers and children through the Ministry of Food’s Welfare Scheme. Despite the hardships of war, it was discovered that children who had taken cod liver oil were healthier than those who had not.

The endorsement of Seven Seas Cod Liver Oil by the British government proved the health benefits of cod liver oil.
