Connect with nature

- By ELLEN WHYTE

SMARTPHONES, tablets and computers mean we’re constantly connected to the Internet, but the flipside is that we’re increasingly disconnected from the natural world.

In recent years, some researchers have started talking about “nature-deficit disorder”, suggesting that this disconnect leads to reduced awareness and increased difficulty in finding meaning in our lives, specifically where we fit into the world.

Some speculate this is why stress, depression and anxiety are reaching record heights in so many urbanised societies.

If you are finding yourself a bit distant from the natural world, here are some activities to bring back that relationship.

1) Go for an early morning walk in a park. In the hour before dawn, you’ll see all sorts of wildlife going about its business from early bird trying to catch those worms to civet cats having an early morning drink from the pond.

2) Walk in the rain. There’s something elemental about getting thoroughly soaked. Also, splashing through puddles is awesome. Wear the right shoes, know you’ll need a complete change after and enjoy yourself. Just one caveat: lightning is dangerous, so don’t walk during a storm.

3) Pet an animal. Many companion animals are just as disconnected from nature as we are but from a human point of view, they are “nature” nevertheless, which means connecting with an animal can give you that natural perspective. If you’re not a pet lover, find one who is and ask if you may stroke silken ears and rub furry chins.

4) Grow something. If you’ve some green space, start weeding and planting. If you’re in an apartment, start a kitchen garden by planting herbs in pots. If you have black thumbs, go for simple stuff such as growing basil and mustard.

5) Swim. In an outdoor pool if you must but try for the river or the sea. Slippery stones and gritty sand between your toes is heavenly, especially if you take time off during the working week. It adds a sinful touch that’s just super indulgent.
