Natural way to lengthen lashes
THE 20th century saw the beginning of convincing false eyelashes, popularly called falsies. This followed its widespread trend.
Eyelash extensions are single synthetic fibres glued one by one to natural eyelashes and are usually fixed in place by formaldehyde-based adhesives or other biologic glues.
But you probably aren’t aware that the adhesives used for eyelash extensions could carry a risk of infection and even cause permanent damage. The adhesives can cause allergic reactions, as can the solvents used to remove them.
In addition, cosmetic eyelash enhancers carry a risk of bacterial and fungal infection.
Even temporary false eyelashes can cause problems. Pulling them off can also remove natural lashes if they get in the way – the traction alopecia is similar to that caused by extensions.
False lashes can also trap dirt and bacteria, creating irritation and infection and a reaction to the glue can cause allergic swelling of the eyelids. Regular use increases the chances of the follicles in eyelids becoming permanently damaged and impair hair growth.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology warns that among the potential dangers associated with cosmetic eyelash extensions and the adhesives used to apply them are allergies and infections of the cornea and eyelid, permanent or temporary loss of eyelashes and eyelid swelling.
There are a number of diseases or disorders involving the eyelashes – madarosis, also known as milphosis, is the abnormal loss of eyelashes.
Blepharitis is the chronic inflammation of the eyelids. In trichiasis, the eyelashes grow back to the ocular globe.
Demodex folliculorum are parasitic face mites that live in the eyelash follicles. They eat sebaceous secretions and dead cells and reproduce inside the follicle, infecting the eyelids.
Disorders such as distichiasis, trichophagia and trichotillomania can be alarming and medical assistance is needed to prevent further deterioration of the eyes.
Nowadays, through extensive years of research, cosmetic laboratories have created many products made with natural ingredients to promote eyelash growth.
Natural ingredients such as mulberry root extract promote better growth of eyelashes and provide much-needed nutrients to strengthen and lengthen lashes naturally. Some even have lasting curling complex for lasting curls.
Mulberry root extract is extracted from the mulberry root bark. It has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for its ability to promote metabolism and stimulate hair growth due to its high level of vitamin C and antioxidant properties.
