Valuable exposure and experience
INTERNATIONAL Medical University (IMU) had its inaugural graduating class for those in the Foundation in Science (FiS) programme in December last year.
The 48 graduates had completed the first step of their tertiary journey and were filled with eager anticipation. Of the cohort, 17 students obtained distinctions, which is a CGPA of 3.7 and above.
Having gained the right foundation for their future studies, these students will go on to pursue medical and health sciences degree programmes of their choice at the university.
The programme is taught by experienced lecturers with previous teaching experience in various pre-university programmes.
FiS is a one-year programme conducted across three semesters. The FiS programme is awarded by IMU and offered at the university’s main campus in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.
IMU takes pride in FiS’ holistic curriculum, which aims to develop various competencies in students.
Felicity Ng, having secured a place in IMU’s medical programme, says, “My experience as a FiS student has been wonderful.
“Exposure and hands-on experience provided by the programme has allowed me to discover my potential and gear me up for my degree. I have also met incredible people in my course. Studying in IMU was the right choice for me.”
The curriculum is tailored to provide a smooth transition from pre-university studies to tertiary education, preparing students for subjects such as chemistry, biology, mathematics, English for academic purposes, physics for health sciences, computing studies and cross-boundary studies.
The Foundation in Science is benchmarked against the standard of local foundation programmes.
External examiners who are experienced lecturers in foundation programmes also provide feedback on FiS’ assessments.
Students are taught to reflect on their learning through reflective writing and gain problem-solving skills in crossboundary studies.
Tan Vei Xhion, who will be pursuing a degree in dentistry at IMU, says, “My year in FiS was a big eye-opener for me as I was exposed to new experiences both academically and socially. It has been a fun-filled year thanks to my friends and lecturers but I have to admit that FIS was challenging. I am happy to have completed FiS as I am now a step closer to my degree.”
FiS students actively participate in clubs, societies, sports and charity events in their course of study. Through these activities, they gain the opportunity to meet friends from various degree programmes.
The Foundation in Science has three intakes this year – January, May and September.
