Engineering your career
ENGINEERING has long been thought to be a lucrative and wide-ranging field of study that offers diverse job prospects. To date, the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) reports that there are 11,305 engineers and 79,767 graduate engineers in the country.
With an array of specialisations that include electrical and electronic, mechanical, petroleum, chemical and civil engineering, engineering students will be able to select an area that speaks of their strengths and skillsets.
Those who are considering a career in engineering should look into obtaining a strong base that will equip them for a successful career. The right education from a world-class university will serve as the perfect launch pad for them to kick-start their future in engineering. One such university is Heriot-Watt University.
Founded in 1821, Heriot-Watt is a leading British university with a long-standing track record of excellence. This legacy of excellence has earned the university its 13th spot in the United Kingdom and second in Scotland as ranked by The Guardian University Guide 2015.
Additionally, Times Higher Education 100 under 50 last year ranked the university 52nd in the world, seventh in the UK and first in Scotland
The university recently opened a new, state-of-the-art campus in Putrajaya, providing students in Malaysia and around the region an opportunity to experience its education excellence on Malaysian shores.
“Our portfolio offers a range of professionally relevant undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in key growth areas for Malaysia in business, construction, actuarial science and engineering fields, including energy and petroleum,” says Prof Robert Craik, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s (HWUM) provost and chief executive officer.
These programmes are developed and accredited by professionals in the industry, ensuring that the syllabus and teaching materials used are current and relevant to the industry’s requirements.
Heriot-Watt University’s engineering programmes have earned them a number of accolades, namely being ranked top in the UK and Scotland for civil engineering and top in Scotland for chemical engineering by The Guardian University Guide 2015.
Additionally, among the subjects ranked first in Scotland by the National Student Survey 2014 were the university’s chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.
At HWUM, students have access to the same top-notch British education. This begins with the university’s Foundation in Science programme. Upon successful completion of the programme, students will be eligible for any of the university’s undergraduate programmes, including its engineering programmes.
At present, HWUM’s programme offerings in engineering include mechanical engineering, petroleum engineering, chemical engineering and civil engineering at the undergraduate level. Petroleum engineering, renewable energy engineering,
