Taylor-ed to be a quality teacher

-

TEACHING is more than a job. It is an opportunity to play an important role in shaping the next generation of leaders and making a difference in their lives. Teachers have the power to mould young minds, and it is for this reason that the teaching profession has to be nurtured to move with the times.

Taylor’s university vice-chancellor and president Professor Datuk Dr Hassan Said explained that with increasing access to information and greater exposure to technology, today’s learners are more in-tune with global developments.

“Thus, the demand for educators is not only to teach with passion, but also to stay up-todate with technology and global issues so that they are able to take on a leadership role with their students.

“This also means the training these teachers get would have to be of top-quality to assure that only educators who can cope with all these developments can go on to groom our future leaders of the world,” he said.

Over the past 25 years, the number of international schools in the world has increased by 603%. Given this staggering growth, there is an urgent need to empower tomorrow’s teachers with an impactful education.

The Taylor’s School of Education (SoED) is committed to doing just that. Its curriculum is built on four pillars which will guide students to becoming professionally trained teachers and world-class educators.

Global and local education

Students will gain holistic knowledge through SoED’s diverse curriculum, which covers both the National Curriculum of England and Wales through the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), as well as the Malaysian Primary Schools Standards Curriculum (KSSR). This grooms future educators to teach globally and gain a broad outlook, while being grounded in local history and cultural practices.

Cutting-edge educators

Students will develop creative and critical thinking skills and learn innovative methods that will enhance the way they teach. All modules are thought in a highly engaging manner both virtually and in a real classroom setting. Educational technology forms an important part of the teaching and learning pedagogy at SoED.

Expansive curriculum

Taylor’s implements practicum across the curriculum programme to address the “theory-practice gap” that is lacking in most teacher education programmes.

Students engage with the uncertainties of the real world in the classroom right at the start of their programme, which not only allows them to critically examine and reflect on practice in the light of theories, but also to critically interrogate and reflect on theories in the light of practice from the very start.

The cyclic learning model adopted here is to learn, observe, learn, practise, evaluate and reflect. This model facilitates learning and reflection continuously.

Unique school placements

These sessions are the core of the programme and provide recipients with important hands-on knowledge that is beyond theory and books. This allows them to be exposed to the classroom environment and experience its complexities, become familiar with teaching ethos, learn through practice and work in pairs – all to develop and hone their teaching skillset, which will help them excel as teachers.

From the first semester, students are immersed in hands-on training at Taylor’s Education Group’s (TEG) five-star International Schools, where they are guided through the weekly Expansive Teaching Practicum sessions with one of TEG’s schools, including Taylor’s International School (KL and Puchong campus) and Nexus International School Putrajaya.

Taylor’s offers a unique teacher-training programme called the Taylor’s World Class Teachers Programme (TWCTP) – the first of its kind in Malaysia. Aimed at raising the bar for teaching in the country, the programme seeks to attract the right candidates to the field. Eligible students will receive up to 100% tuition fee waiver for the full duration of their studies at Taylor’s University.

Students under this programme who have completed the Bachelor of Education (Primary Education) (Hons) with a minimum CGPA of 3 and have a minimum grade B for their Teaching Practice will be given first priority for job placement at Taylor’s International School.

Apply before March 15 to be part of this unique programme. For more details about Taylor’s World Class Teacher’s Programme, log on to www.taylors.edu.my/twctp, e-mail admissions@taylors.edu.my or call 03-5629 5000.
