Learning at your own pace
EYE Level is the leading provider of supplemental education in Mathematics and English, striving to teach basic learning skills to children aged between three and 16.
With over 30 years of teaching experience and over 2.5 million children enrolled worldwide, Eye Level is opening its doors to ambitious franchisees to produce more proactive problem-solvers.
Daekyo Malaysia country manager Jean Kim explains what is in store for Eye Level, its students and franchisees:
What makes Eye Level’s teaching approach different?
What makes our educational programme different is our educational principle – students learn at their own pace. We need to prevent a learning gap among students, even though learning may be happening in the same place. This helps the teacher understand a student’s learning needs and create an effective individualised learning plan.
When there is no pressure to perform, the student is more relaxed and sees learning as something fun, which boosts his or her motivation to learn much faster. At Eye Level, we base learning on a student’s eye level.
We also emphasise the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our aspiration is for students to diagnose learning needs independently with the aim of crafting a generation of problem solvers and critical, lifelong learners. We call this system Self-Directed Learning (SDL). Can you elaborate on the SDL system? Under the SDL method, students will develop independent learning skills at Eye Level learning centres. Instructors will provide guidance as they move through their individualised programme. We conduct a Diagnostic Test to determine the best place for the student to start.
Eye Level believes SDL is the key to encouraging students to be proactive and learn independently. It is achieved through four distinct processes.
Firstly, a goal is set based on a learner’s characteristics, which can be short, medium or long term. This helps students to have a clear goal and always strive to achieve their target.
Secondly, the right study plan is developed by the instructor. Parents’ continuous feedback is also gathered for smooth progress.
Thirdly, SDL provides the right amount of academic coaching, while still emphasising creative thinking and proactive learning.
Lastly, instructors will evaluate learning outcomes by providing regular consultation with parents regarding their children’s learning progress. Simply put, SDL is a learning system conceptualised to give our students a holistic education experience.
Eye Level recently launched Blended Learning: Eye Level Math and Happy Talk programmes in Malaysia. What are they about and what are their benefits?
Happy Talk is a conversational English blended learning programme that incorporates visuals with animated characters so that students can have fun while mastering speaking and listening skills. It targets children as young as five to nine years old and is an additional programme to Eye Level English.
The Blended Learning programme also includes Eye Level Math, which serves as an enhancement initiative to help students learn better.
In general, Blended Learning is a combination of face-to-face learning, also known as offline learning and online education. It mixes different learning methods that help to meet our learning and teaching objectives.
We believe Eye Level students will enjoy the right blend of online and offline methods,
making learning even more fun and engaging.
