Practical, comprehensive approach to accounting
THE Diploma in Professional Accounting (DPAC) is a full-time home-grown programme by the Sunway TES Centre for Accountancy Excellence, which was launched in March last year.
Approved by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), the programme is the first of its kind in Malaysia to have the title “Professional”.
Targeted at SPM school-leavers, this two-year Diploma programme is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required in the areas of accounting and finance.
The programme also aims to avail students with broader options on their path to professional accounting, and provides them with the advantage of completing their degree in Accounting, Business or Finance.
The DPAC is practical and comprehensive, and is designed to meet students’ needs for training in fundamental business practices with emphasis on general accounting and finance principles.
It is a qualification that provides an industry-specific pathway for students wishing to practise as a qualified junior accountant.
Students will be trained to communicate effectively with management professionals and business stakeholders, and learn to consolidate on issues related to accounting and finance, operations and marketing.
Graduates of DPAC will be eligible for entry into Year 2 of the undergraduate programmes: the BSc (Hons) in Accounting and Finance at Sunway University and Bachelor of Business with Victoria University at Sunway College.
The programme is benchmarked against the ACCA and ICAEW syllabus, with both professional awarding bodies granting up to six paper exemptions to diploma graduates on their progression to professional level qualifications.
Examination papers are moderated by other faculties to ensure that assessment standards and assignments are maintained at a standard used in local or overseas higher educational institutions.
All subjects are internally assessed. It has a balanced assessment of between 40% coursework and 60% final examination.
The coursework, which takes into account quizzes, class attendance, assignments and a mid-term test, is expected to be completed prior to the semester’s final examination.
Students are also given the opportunity to go on field trips as part of their practical exposure for insight into real working environments.
As part of their curriculum, a group of 20 students paid a visit to Bank Negara Malaysia to find out more about its operations and governance, its role as the central bank for the country and its relevance to the Malaysian economy.
The students all agreed that they enjoyed and learned a lot from the visit.
“The trip was an eye-opener. I learned a lot about the Malaysian economy,” said Elisa Qistina Baharum.
For Daniel Chow, the visit helped him gain a deeper understanding of the history of the country’s monetary system, while Nazura Nawas Khan was impressed with the various collections at the Museum and Art Gallery.
Such field trips help expose students to business and entrepreneurial aspects, and keep them up-to-date in their related fields of study.
Students are taught by industry professionals. By the time they graduate, they will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to be effective and problem-solving communicators, deal with the rapid changes around them and think critically.
The DPAC has three academic intakes per year in January, April and July.
