Medical studies like no other
MELAKA-MANIPAL Medical College (Manipal University) or MMMC is the place that aspiring doctors and dentists look to for quality medical education.
This is not surprising as MMMC has been recognised with many accolades, including being awarded six-star ratings consecutively by MyQuest in its last two assessments.
Furthermore, the BrandLaureate Institute of Superbrands South-East Asia conferred it a Superbrand – Medical Education in 2011.
MMMC’s programmes are unique in the sense that its twinning feature requires students to go overseas first before returning to Malaysia for clinical training in local hospitals.
This is in contrast to the usual practice of twinning programmes in Malaysia and ensures that MMMC students get the best of both worlds.
They first receive groundwork in basic sciences in the tradition of renowned Indian medical education in Manipal, India, which is then reinforced with thorough clinical training in Malaysian hospitals in the second phase.
Manipal is consistently ranked among the top five medical schools in India, and has been a favoured destination among Malaysians for medical and dental studies since the 1960s.
It is estimated currently that about 20% of doctors in Malaysia are Manipal alumni.
The flagship programme MBBS commenced with the first cohort in 1997.
Students complete two and a half years of pre-clinical basic sciences studies at the Manipal Campus and then return to Malaysia for another two and a half years of comprehensive clinical training in the Ministry of Health’s (MoH) hospitals in Malacca, Muar, Segamat, Jasin and suburban polyclinics in and around Malacca.
MMMC has delivered high-quality medical professionals, with 2,755 doctors having graduated up to September last year.
The much acclaimed Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme is so popular that enrolment is usually filled between 12 and 18 months ahead of the intakes, with oversub- scribed applications.
BDS students go to Manipal for two years and then complete their clinical training at the Malacca campus at a fully equipped dental clinic.
Dentistry students also visit the MoH dental clinics, besides organising dental camps in kampungs and Orang Asli villages in Malacca.
Due to its popularity, parents recognise that the best chance to enrol in this course is to qualify for MMMC’s homegrown Foundation in Science (FiS).
The one-year pre-university FiS attracts many students because those who complete it are given priority over other applicants in MMMC’s degree programmes, provided they obtain the statutory minimum entry requirements.
FiS also gives students a glimpse into subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology and Oral Biology, facilitating the transition to their MBBS and BDS studies.
With outstanding facilities and sheer dedication to ensuring quality education, Melaka-Manipal aims to instil in its students the lesson that there is more to being a doctor than merely passing exams; it is a vocation.
