Boost your concentration

- By EllEn WhytE

DO you find yourself continually distracted no matter what you do? Try these tips to boost your concentration.

Know yourself

We all have times of day that are our “best thinking” times. Don’t be misled by the assumption that you think best at night simply because it’s quiet. Instead, ask yourself when you feel most energetic. If you don’t know, mark your activities on an hourly pattern for a week. Once you settle on your best time, set that aside for work that needs concentration.

Make a brain den

Being able to listen to music or watch TV is not what makes a good study place. Get a good chair and desk as well as the right sort of lighting. If you can, pick a place that is faraway from external noise. If you can’t, get earphones that block out sound.

Don’t think outside the den

Going for a run while you’re thinking is a good idea. Just don’t confuse places where you should be relaxing, including the bed, with places where you should be working. Crossing boundaries will make it hard to rest and lack of sleep will scramble your brains.

try the five-more rule

The idea is that when you want to quit, you have probably got a bit more in you, so try to get the most out of yourself by saying: “I’ll just do five minutes, examples, pages or sentences more.” If five is too much for you, then try three.

Eat well

Food is your body’s fuel so make sure you tank up properly. An easy rule of thumb is to eat six colours of fruits and vegetables a day to make sure you get a good range of vitamins. Eat fats such as butter, condensed milk and coconut sparingly.
