Pathway to success
AN International Medical University (IMU) alumnus, Vignesh Krishna Kumar is currently the managing director of Biovenus, a biotechnology company that he founded in 2014. Vignesh joined the university in 2009 and completed his degree in 2012. Upon his degree completion, he decided to pursue a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) in Biotechnology, with visions of setting up his own company. Once he obtained his degree, he joined Pfizer as a sales executive before establishing his own firm. He discusses his work experience and fondly recalls the invaluable time spent at IMU.
“As a managing director, my responsibilities are to make sure that sales personnel carry out their duties well, look for business development opportunities, deal with the manufacturers, come up with business strategies, make sure export products are on track and ensure that the whole company is in line.
“The reason I choose to study Medical Biotechnology is because I could see a good future in it from a business perspective. I chose to study in IMU because it is one of the top universities in the country and also upholds a high quality of teaching and assessment.
“The IMU education curriculum is very tough so I learned how to work hard and stay focused. Besides that, I also got a chance to make friends with other students from different courses related to health care, which further helps me understand the Malaysian health care perspective.
“I believe my time at IMU had moulded me well to keep track of deadlines and gave me a good understanding of the research and development part of nutraceuticals, especially during my internship period, which ignited my passion in nutraceticals.
“At IMU, the curriculum of its medical biotechnology degree is developed to meet international standards and is accepted by renowned international partner universities (University of Newcastle, Australia or University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom) for credit transfer into relevant programmes.
“IMU is also the first Malaysian university that provides a complete and specialised undergraduate training in Medical Biotechnology. Graduates of these degrees can undertake postgraduate degrees in any related disciplines.
“The Medical Biotechnology programme in IMU exposes you to industrial attachments, giving you the opportunity to gain valuable industrial experience and required skills to be immediately ready for employment,” says Vignesh.
The next commencement date for this programme is in August. If you have pre-university qualifications and an interest in Medical Biotechnology, apply online now and join the university in your pursuit of a promising and rewarding career.
Apply at the Education and Further Studies Fair and get a waiver (except medicine and dentistry). If you have just completed SPM and do not have a pre-university qualification, consider enrolling in the one-year IMU Foundation in Science (FiS), the preferred foundation and direct route for entry into any of the university’s local degree programmes.
You can find out more about the Foundation in Science programme on the FiS Info Day on March 8 at its campus in Bukit Jalil.
