iNTERIOR Design students from Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) participated in a project-cum-competition to beautify welfare homes organised by the Rotary Club of Pudu last year. Under the project “Beautify My Home”, the group of 10 MIA students was assigned to House of Joy in Puchong.

The project, which took two months to complete, was worth the time and effort as people from the home are very happy with the makeover. MIA was also unanimously selected as the winner of the competition and took home the cash prize of RM5,000.

The project commenced with visiting the home. Many of the students were appalled by its condition. After necessary site measurements and discussion on how to improve the living and dining areas to make the place more homely, a proposal was submitted to the Rotary Club of Pudu for approval. After obtaining the green light, the students wasted no time working on the refurbishment project.

The group did a lot of brainstorming and exchanged a lot of ideas to solve problems. “We learned to work towards the same objective and converge our ideas to come to a consensus,” said Vincent Yee.

MIA provides a comprehensive Interior Design course whereby students are trained in the aesthetic and technical aspects of interior design required for professional practice. Throughout the programme, students develop creative and innovative design abilities by working on projects, which requires theoretical, conceptual and practical design inputs. The institute maintains a close relationship with the industrial sector and keeps abreast with development in design and technology.

From its humble beginnings in 1967 at Jalan Treacher (now known as Jalan Sultan Ismail) to having its own campus now in Taman Melawati, MIA has maintained its mission to provide quality and affordable education in the field of art, design and music. Today, the institute also offers a range of other Diploma courses. All courses are accredited by Malaysia Qualifications Agency (MQA).

Strong international links

MIA has established links with prestigious universities and colleges in the United Kingdom, Australia, Taiwan and China through which its graduates may proceed to complete their degree programmes, saving time and money to pursue their degrees oversea and to obtain a well-balanced education combining Malaysian and overseas learning experience and exposures. With MQA accreditation, MIA graduates may also further their studies in local universities.
