Get ready for a sound career
cUE, playback, fade and cut are some of the terms students at KDU University College’s (KDU UC) School of Communication and Creative Arts (SCCA) will learn and which will become integral in their vocabulary as they put into practice what they have learned at the institution’s all-new industry-standard broadcast, recording and photography facilities, preparing students to be industry-ready.
A total investment of almost RM1mil was made for the development of the television, radio broadcast, sound recording and photography studios at its new campus in Utropolis, Glenmarie, which aims to benefit students with hands-on experience right on campus.
Well-equipped Two photography studios, a fully equipped television studio, a sound recording studio, which can produce professional recordings as well as the student-run campus radio broadcast studio are facilities that allow students to practise in a “live” environment with industry experienced lecturers to provide guidance.
KDU UC is the first higher education institution with its own student-run broad- cast radio station on campus named KDU Radio.
Students learn to master not only the technicalities of the radio broadcast studio equipment, but also how to make a playlist, write a script, read the news and interview guests.
As sessions can go “live” anytime, students learn how to think on their feet and tackle the unexpected.
Exciting experience Adrian Koo Ee Teng, a first-year student of the Bachelor of Communication (Hons) programme, said, “It was an exciting experience making announcements at the radio broadcast studio.
“Since we will be doing live interviews with invited celebrities soon, it will help us to introduce them and run a live interview professionally. I can’t believe I’m already doing this in my first semester.”
“I can’t wait to have the interview with my celebrity guest. This experience of being able to go live like a deejay in a radio station is both scary and exciting at the same time. I am looking forward to my other subjects, as I will be able to use the television, photography and sound recording studios as well,” said Chew Heawie, another first semester student enrolled in the Bachelor of Communication (Hons) programme.
Practical-based programmes SCCA acting Academic Department head Anna Chuah Lee Ee said, “Our programmes are very practical-based and the new facilities allow the lecturers to creatively incorporate pedagogy and make knowledge come alive. The practical experience reinforces the knowledge gained and enables our students to be industry-ready and hit the ground running.”
SCCA, which has lecturers who are also industry practitioners, had consulted with various broadcast and production houses to make sure its facilities were equipped with industry-standard equipment to ensure students are already adept at using these facilities and only concentrate on producing the best work once they enter the industry.
