ADVANCE Tertiary College (ATC) has emerged as champion of the 9th LAWASIA Moot Competition (Malaysian National Rounds).

It earned the right to represent Malaysia at the 9th LAWASIA International Moot Competition 2014 held in Bangkok, Thailand.

Three ATC teams participated and were among the 25 teams taking part from 10 institutions around Malaysia.

The competition was hosted by the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration (KLRCA) in Jalan Conlay and the moot problem was an arbitration proceeding as well.

ATC has an excellent record in this competition as it has won the national rounds three times in a row and five times in total.

The champion team comprising Melvin Ng Yet Ting, Aizurra Mirsya Mohd Aminudin, Jaswant Singh and Baldeep Singh powered their way to the championship by defeating teams from some of the prominent law schools in Malaysia.

They put their victory down to a lot of hard work and sheer determination. Lifting the LAWASIA Malaysian Bar Challenge trophy was a dream come true for the team.

The two other ATC teams emerged in third place and fourth place respectively.

The victory was made sweeter when mooters from ATC emerged as the three best mooters in the entire competition.

Janine Kimura was named the best mooter of the competition, taking home the Mah Weng Kwai Challenge trophy for the best mooter.

The second highest placed mooter was Ng and the third was Thanganachiar Vasantharajan from ATC’s Penang branch.

This was testament to ATC’s dominance at the competition.

The teams paid tribute to their coaches, namely Alwin Rajasurya, himself a champion mooter who also graduated from ATC.

Together with him was Ragunathan Natarajan, who coached the team from ATC Penang, and Amy Cheah Hsiao Phin.

The coaches stated that although celebrations are due, the ultimate goal is to win the international competition that ATC last won in 2011 when the competition was held in Seoul, South Korea.

There was much more hard work to be invested for that competition.

ATC has a long tradition of excellence in various mooting competitions in the past and encourages all students to take part.

An internal competition is held every year to unearth talent and to provide as many students as possible the opportunity to hone their skills.

Mooting workshops and exhibitions are also regularly held for the benefit of the students.

Mooting is an integral part of legal education as it provides training for the fundamental skills necessary to become a successful lawyer.

Mooting offers a systematic training process of essential skills of problem solving, legal analysis, drafting submissions and the development of public speaking.

ATC recognises this and ensures its students are exposed to mooting at national and international levels.

ATC welcomes potential students to start their quest towards academic excellence in Law.

The March 2015 intake is in progress.
