Good English for success in university

tHE English language is the global lingua franca of universities and colleges and key to students engaging actively and effectively in all facets of their academic life – be it embarking on a student exchange programme, applying for a summer job or composing a project paper.

While proficiency in English is crucial to academic success in university studies, specific skills such as the ability to engage in active communication with the people around, conduct winning presentations and write effective project papers and essays are vital prerequisites that allow students to share ideas effectively.

After university, a proper command of the English language is even more essential to be successful in vying for highly sought-after jobs or steering global businesses.

Fast track English proficiency for university success ELS Language Centres, a specialised English language training provider for over 50 years, has trained more than a million students globally.

ELS Malaysia offers programmes ideal for university and college-bound students. Its main programme, the Certified Intensive English Programme (CIEP), features nine globally recognised levels, from beginner to advanced.

In ELS centres, every student starts at a level fitting his level of English proficiency and proceeds to quickly and effectively achieve the desired level of proficiency to meet current academic needs.

Each level takes only one month to complete and within this short period, committed students will experience improved productive and receptive English skills.

Students can choose to advance through the levels to reach the highest level: Level 109, at which they are considered near-fluent and are prepared to take any standardised English language test.

The CIEP is designed for committed students who want to improve their grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading and writing skills – skills crucial to one’s overall English language development.

Make new friends from all over the world At all ELS Language Centres, students have the advantage of practising the English language while communicating and making new friends with classmates from over 50 countries. While class sizes are small, after-class social activities organised by ELS teachers allow students to continuously use their acquired English language skills in authentic situations – allowing for new skills to be internalised faster and more effectively.

ELS international pathways ELS programmes and levels are recognised by over 650 universities around the world for purposes of admission into different academic courses. ELS level 109 graduates can use this achievement as proof of English language proficiency for admission into ELS partner institutions.

All ELS centres provide free university counselling to its students and the public for entry into any of its 650-plus partner institutions in the United States, Canada, Australia and Malaysia.

Students who seek to learn more about their university pathway options can take some time after class to seek counselling from trained ELS counsellors. Appointments can be made by calling the ELS centre of your choice.

Scholarships Scholarships to ELS and its university partners are also available and interested students are encouraged to visit any ELS Centre to gather information on the scholarship opportunities available.
