MELAKA-MANIPAL Medical College (Manipal University) opens its satellite campus in Muar, Johor.

As evidence of its confidence in Malaysia, the Manipal Group of India has invested more than RM50mil in building a new campus in Muar.

It houses teaching-learning facilities such as lecture theatres, classrooms, a Clinical Skills Lab, library and a multi-purpose hall.

Built on the 17-acre (6.88ha) site are student and staff accommodation and food outlets as well as gym and recreational facilities, including a swimming pool, as MelakaManipal strongly believes that “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”.

The Muar Campus was developed to cope with the increasing popularity of its medicine, dentistry and foundation courses by those who consider Melaka-Manipal the choice medical and dental school.

It also enables the college to spread its clinical training to MBBS students in hospitals over a larger geographical area, while reducing travel time.

Students who have completed their Phase I studies (pre-clinical) in Manipal, India, now commence their Phase II (clinical) stint by being based in Muar at the Hospital Pakar Sultanah Aminah, and Hospital Tangkak and Hospital Segamat in general.

Upon completion of two semesters, students return to the Malacca campus to complete the MBBS programme at Melaka General, Jasin and Alor Gajah Hospitals.

It is envisaged that dental clinical facilities will also be extended to Muar within the campus in the not-too-distant future.

Melaka-Manipal has always been a favoured destination for those looking for proven high-quality education in Malaysia.

With a rich heritage of excellence in higher education over 60 years in India and since 1997 in Malaysia, Manipal has developed a strong brand reputation, especially for medical and dental education in Malaysia.

It is no surprise that the dentistry programme’s quota is fully taken up 18 months ahead of its intake dates for the past three years running.

Spillovers are even willing to wait another year to join the BDS programme.

The MBBS programme was launched in 1997 with the first batch. To date, it has delivered 2,755 proficient medical professionals, not just to the Malaysian health systems, but also all over the globe, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.

Melaka-Manipal’s Foundation in Science (FiS) is a pre-university course for those who have completed SPM or O-Levels and wish to pursue a medical or dental career.

An enhanced feature of the FiS is the inclusion of medicine and dentistry related subjects such as anatomy, pharmacology and oral biology. These subjects facilitate FiS students’ progress in the MBBS and BDS courses.

The ojectives of the programme are to develop students’ study skills to cope with the hectic degree courses, improving intellectual and practical skills and the capacity to learn.
