aS you are reading this, a large number of Malaysian medical students are graduating and have completed their housemanship, and are already flying off to the United States for specialised training.

Last month alone, Kaplan Medical has provided an avenue for over 30 Malaysian medical graduates an opportunity in the live US classes for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).

These live classes provide training for fresh medical graduates to move closer to achieving their specialist career in the US. This is done through the residency, a paid training programme that ensures full specialist licence at the end of the residency course.

Kaplan, being the premier test prepping company in the US, prepares medical students worldwide for the USMLE.

Programme director Hareen Theivasigamany of Kaplan Medical in Malaysia provides free seminars and university talks on the declining number of medical physicians in the US and the lack of specialists in Malaysia and has urged medical students to pursue their specialisation.

Last year, the Health Ministry emphasised the shortage of specialists in Malaysia and has advised medical graduates to venture into alternate pathways to receive specialist training. With Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obama Care) being approved in the US, millions of American citizens will be acquiring free medical care and the declining supply of physicians in the US gives an opportunity for international medical graduates to pursue their specialisation and practise there.

Malaysian physicians and medical students now have the opportunity to pursue their residency in the US with the flexible threestep examination of the USMLE, which allows them to do it while in medical school.

Over the last two years, Kaplan and Nugrahan have assisted many students to the US to pursue their residency with the path of becoming a specialist.

From providing free live seminars and medical lectures online on the Kaplan fan page, now even first-year medical students can get a taste of their specialisation future.

International medical graduates are highly paid during their residency in the US and the specialist training they receive moulds them into becoming a better physician.

Upon completion, these Malaysian students have the option to come home and serve their country as a specialist as it is recognised in Malaysia.

On April 17 (Friday) in the evening, the Regional Director of Kaplan Medical will be coming to Malaysia from New York for a seminar to explain the prospects of specialisation training in the US to Malaysian medical graduates and parents.
