Reconnect with nature

- By ELLEN WHYTE

THE advent of smartphones, tablets and computers means that we are constantly connected to the Internet, but the flip side is we have become increasingly disconnected from the natural world.

In recent years, some researchers have started talking about “nature-deficit disorder”, suggesting that this sense of disconnect leads to reduced awareness and increased difficulty in finding meaning in our lives, specifically where we fit in the world.

Some researchers speculate that this is the reason stress, depression and anxiety levels are reaching record heights in so many urbanised societies today.

If you find that you are becoming a bit distant from the natural world, here are some therapeutic activities that can help restore your relationship with nature.

Go for an early morning walk in a park

In the hour before dawn, you’ll see all sorts of wildlife going about their daily activities, from early birds trying to catch those worms to civet cats having a drink at the pond.

Walk in the rain

There is something elemental about getting thoroughly soaked. Also, splashing through puddles is a fun activity.

Enjoy yourself and be sure to wear the right shoes and bring a change of clothes.

There is just one caution: lightning is dangerous so don’t walk in the rain during a storm.

Pet an animal

Many companion animals are just as disconnected from nature as we are but from a human point of view they are “nature”, which means that connecting with an animal can give you that natural perspective.

If you’re not a pet lover, find someone who is and ask if you may stroke their pet’s silken ears and rub their furry chins.

Grow something

If you have some green space in your home, start weeding and planting. If you live in an apartment, start a kitchen garden by planting herbs in pots.

If you have black thumbs, go for simple stuff such as growing basil and mustard.

Go swimming

Take a dip in an outdoor pool if you must but try the river or the sea if possible.

The feeling of slippery stones and gritty sand between your toes is heavenly, especially if you take time off during the working week.

?? ?? It is important to take a break from technology every now and then to reconnect with the natural world.
