For clearer and fairer complexion
A FAIR, clear and luminous complexion has been highly prized in Asia throughout the centuries.
This is why for most Asian women one of the dreaded skin conditions is discolouration or melasma. “Melasma is a very common skin disorder and it can affect anyone,” explains Dr Mohamed Siddique of Roopi Aesthetic Clinic.
“It is often associated with the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone. It is especially common in pregnant women and those taking birth control pills or are on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) during menopause. Sun exposure is also a strong risk factor for causing discolouration, making melasma particularly common in tropical climates,” explains Dr Siddique.
Women who are desperate to get rid of discolouration turn to skin whitening products. Many of the skin lightening agents in these products, however, end up causing more problems.
The most commonly used skin lightening agents are hydroquinone, alphs arbutin, kojic acid and L-ascorbic acid. Each has its negative side effects.
“Hydroquinone is associated with potential carcinogenity and other side effects. Alphs arbutin is an effective treatment option but it requires long-term studies to evaluate its safety.
“The reason for this is when it is broken down in the body, it produces hydroquinone, although not in the same concentration as applying pure hydroquinone,” says Dr Siddique.
Now there’s good news – flawless skin and a radiant complexion can be restored thanks to Lumixyl, a topical skin brightening system developed by scientists at Stanford University in the United States.
“Lumixyl contains synthetic peptides that are non-toxic and not cytotoxic. These peptides are a strong and effective inhibitor of tyrosinase, an enzyme that produces melanin, which causes discolouration and uneven skin tone,” explains Dr Siddique.
Lumixyl skin brightening system features other ingredients such as clinical-strength glycolic acid to stimulate cell turnover, potent antioxidants to optimise skin brightening and Lumiblock, a dual sun protection that gives 100% physical block that does not leave a sunscreen smell or residue.
According to clinical studies done at Stanford University, patients using Lumixyl noticed a visible lightening of discolouration after four to eight weeks. Studies also showed that Lumixyl also targets all kinds of skin problems such as post-inflammatory, hyperdiscolouration, uneven skin tone, sunspots, age spots, photo damage and dull skin.
