Effective way to nail the problem

-

IF you think your nails look ugly, discoloured and misshapen, your nails may be infected with a nail fungus. Nail fungus changes the colour of the nail from naturally pinkish to white, yellow, brown or green and causes the nails to thicken.

If left untreated, the nails will start to crumble or become scaly, emit a foul smell and, eventually, fall off completely. Without nails, you are more susceptible to infections and injuries.

Nail fungus is highly contagious and can spread to your loved ones through shared items that come into contact with the infection such as shoes, socks and nail tools.

The sooner you seek medical advice or treatment, the faster the problem will be resolved.

Causes of nail infections

Frequent hand-washing or contact with water can damage the protective skin at the base of the nail, allowing infection to occur. Highly susceptible are housewives, chefs, cleaners and hair salon workers.

Those who often do pedicures and manicures may be susceptible because without proper sterilisation of the equipment, nail fungus can spread among clients who frequent nail salons.

In addition, a coat of pretty pink polish can trap unwanted moisture, which is a prime breeding ground for nail fungus.

Those who have compromised immune systems have very little natural defences against fungal infections.

Their chances of getting infections are higher, which explains why fungal infections are more common among people aged 55 and above.

Individuals who have poor blood circulation, such as diabetics, have a higher risk of developing fungal nail infections.

This is due to poor blood circulation to the extremities, which creates conditions perfect for the fungus to take hold.

Wearing gloves, socks and tight-fitting shoes generate a lot of heat and moisture, making it a perfect environment for nail fungus to flourish.

Effective treatment

The nail plate surface plays an important role in preventing the invasion of pathogens. Acidic pH is known to inhibit the growth of fungus and bacteria.

Once the nail pH is alkaline, nail fungus multiplies quickly.

It is important to create a non-friendly |environment for fungus growth by maintaining a natural acidic pH.

You will know that the treatment is effective when fresh, healthy nails grow from the base of the nail.

The old-infected part of the nail will eventually grow out and need to be clipped off but this process can take several months.
