Hunk of a hero

Chris Hemsworth (aka Thor) is anointed the ‘Sexiest Man alive’. Here are the reasons why.

ONE of the things I love on television is the very funny and entertaining Ellen. Hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, the talkshow programme is like a burst of sunshine, especially after a long dreary day in the office. (Erm, that doesn’t mean I don’t love my job. I do. Honestly.)

The comedienne takes great interest in her audience and guests, and is always up for a good time.

Best of all, she doesn’t take herself seriously, and is willing to do anything – and I mean anything – to get a chuckle or two. (My dream is to one day attend a taping of Ellen, specifically one of her 12 Days Of Christmas episodes, in which she gives out loads of stuff.)

Anyways, a recent Ellen episode featured Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor in the upcoming Avengers: Age Of Ultron blockbuster. The 31-year-old Australian actor is also People magazine’s pick as the “Sexiest Man Alive” of 2014.

Throughout his interview with DeGeneres, Hemsworth was charming, laid-back and self-deprecating.

Who needs a hammer, when one is armed with a sense of humour? That is possibly the sexiest weapon anyone can possess.

Hemsworth, who is married to Spanish actress Elsa Pataky, also spoke fondly of his three children.

A superhero who is also a devoted father? Yes, ladies, feel free to swoon.

So the God of Thunder certainly deserved his “Sexiest Man” accolade. It got me thinking though, who were the previous winners of this title?

People’s annual “Sexiest Man Alive” feature is billed as a benchmark of male attractiveness and typically includes famous people and celebrities.

Its other popular special issues include “World’s Most Beautiful” and “Best & Worst Dressed”.

The “Sexiest” title apparent- ly originated from a discussion on a planned story on Mel Gibson in 1985.

A female editor exclaimed, “Oh my God, he is the sexiest man alive!”

And someone suggested, “You should use that as a cover line.”

Hemsworth marks the 28th “Sexiest Man Alive” announcement, taking the crown from previous year’s champ, singer Adam Levine.

Some of the past winners are still widely considered the biggest heartthrobs around – such as George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck and Pierce Brosnan. Others, like Gibson, have seen a fall from grace.

And we have bade farewell to the likes of Patrick Swayze (1991’s Sexiest Man Alive), who died following a battle with pancreatic cancer in 2009. John F. Kennedy Jr, who won in 1988 when he was 27, died 11 years later in a plane crash.

The late son of President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis remains the youngest person to have been given the title, while the oldest was Sean Connery, who was 59 when he won in 1989. JFK Jr and Levine are the only non-actors to have won to date. Pitt (in 1995 and 2000), Clooney (1997 and 2006) and Johnny Depp (2003 and 2009) have won Sexiest Man Alive twice. Meanwhile, Richard Gere won in 1999 but was also the recipient of the special Sexiest Couple Alive edition in 1993, with Cindy Crawford. Who do you think will be deemed most desirable in 2015? Perhaps Hemsworth’s Avengers co-star Chris Evans? After all, he is Captain America.

Like the rest of the world, William is waiting with bated breath for the new Avengers movie. Send feedback to star2@the star.com.my. Thor-rific: Hemsworth
