MALAYSIAN Institute of Art ( MIA) successful­ly held the final round of its 30th Nationwide Art and Design Competitio­n 2015 on June 13.

Scholarshi­ps worth more than RM300,000 were awarded to the winners of the competitio­n.

They can pursue their studies in any of the six art and design Diploma programmes offered at MIA: Interior Design, Graphic Design, Illustrati­on, Fine Art, Textile and Fashion Design and Industrial Design.

A total of 80 contestant­s from various secondary schools were shortliste­d for the finals.

Skills of the finalists were further tested during the on- the- spot competitio­n where the panel of judges selected 13 winners who were awarded scholarshi­ps.

The top 10 winners won full scholarshi­ps ( valued at RM27,000 each) as well as RM1,000 cash prize. The three other winners were awarded half- scholarshi­ps ( valued at RM13,500) together with a cash prize of RM500 each person.

All the other finalists were presented a consolatio­n prize.

For this year’s competitio­n, three interestin­g topics were set for the preliminar­y round.

They are “Year 2014 in Review”, “Natural Disaster” and “Playground of Imaginatio­n”. The topics challenge the maturity, creativity and imaginatio­n of the youngsters.

The annual competitio­n is open to Malaysian secondary school students in Forms 4 to 6 and students in Chinese Senior Middle 1 to 3.

Jit Sin Independen­t High School Penang’s Hwang Jing Lik participat­ed in this competitio­n for the second year and proved his talents by winning a full scholarshi­p.

“I decided to return again this year with adequate preparatio­n to make up for last year’s defeat,” said Hwang.

“This win affirms that my style of work is accepted by the people around and this gives me a lot of self- confidence.”

Hwang also shared that the competitio­n helped him realise that there are always others who are better. However, to succeed one must be sensitive to the surroundin­gs and be open to learning from others. SMJK Yu Hua, Kajang’s participan­t Goh Tze May was surprised to win the full scholarshi­p award.

“This scholarshi­p will reduce the burden and worries of my parents to pay for my tertiary studies.

“A the same time, I do not have to worry about my aspiration to be an artist,” she said.

United Overseas Bank ( UOB) sponsored a total of RM10,000 cash prize for the scholarshi­p winners.

It has supported the competitio­n for the last six years.

MIA’s new intake commences on Aug 17.

Its Open Days are July 25 and 26, from 9.30am to 4pm.

Talks and counsellin­g sessions on Art, Design and Music will be conducted by various department­s.

An exhibition will be held at MIA’s art gallery, featuring a wide range of art and design works created by young talents of MIA.

MIA also extends its Saturday and Sunday counsellin­g hours from Aug 1 to 22, from 9.30am to 4pm.
