Canvas for aspiring artists
MALAYSIAN Institute of Art ( MIA) successfully held the final round of its 30th Nationwide Art and Design Competition 2015 on June 13.
Scholarships worth more than RM300,000 were awarded to the winners of the competition.
They can pursue their studies in any of the six art and design Diploma programmes offered at MIA: Interior Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, Fine Art, Textile and Fashion Design and Industrial Design.
A total of 80 contestants from various secondary schools were shortlisted for the finals.
Skills of the finalists were further tested during the on- the- spot competition where the panel of judges selected 13 winners who were awarded scholarships.
The top 10 winners won full scholarships ( valued at RM27,000 each) as well as RM1,000 cash prize. The three other winners were awarded half- scholarships ( valued at RM13,500) together with a cash prize of RM500 each person.
All the other finalists were presented a consolation prize.
For this year’s competition, three interesting topics were set for the preliminary round.
They are “Year 2014 in Review”, “Natural Disaster” and “Playground of Imagination”. The topics challenge the maturity, creativity and imagination of the youngsters.
The annual competition is open to Malaysian secondary school students in Forms 4 to 6 and students in Chinese Senior Middle 1 to 3.
Jit Sin Independent High School Penang’s Hwang Jing Lik participated in this competition for the second year and proved his talents by winning a full scholarship.
“I decided to return again this year with adequate preparation to make up for last year’s defeat,” said Hwang.
“This win affirms that my style of work is accepted by the people around and this gives me a lot of self- confidence.”
Hwang also shared that the competition helped him realise that there are always others who are better. However, to succeed one must be sensitive to the surroundings and be open to learning from others. SMJK Yu Hua, Kajang’s participant Goh Tze May was surprised to win the full scholarship award.
“This scholarship will reduce the burden and worries of my parents to pay for my tertiary studies.
“A the same time, I do not have to worry about my aspiration to be an artist,” she said.
United Overseas Bank ( UOB) sponsored a total of RM10,000 cash prize for the scholarship winners.
It has supported the competition for the last six years.
MIA’s new intake commences on Aug 17.
Its Open Days are July 25 and 26, from 9.30am to 4pm.
Talks and counselling sessions on Art, Design and Music will be conducted by various departments.
An exhibition will be held at MIA’s art gallery, featuring a wide range of art and design works created by young talents of MIA.
MIA also extends its Saturday and Sunday counselling hours from Aug 1 to 22, from 9.30am to 4pm.
