Telling real from fake
TODAY, the demand for manuka honey has greatly expanded worldwide.
So, how can you tell with certainty if the manuka honey you bought is genuine?
One of the simplest and most reliable markers of genuine manuka honey is methylglyoxal.
MgO Manuka Honey certification System is the world’s first scientific verifiable testing system of anti- bacterial activity of manuka honey.
As reported in the Journal of Molecular Nutrition and Food Research in January 2008, in 2006, a german scientist, Prof Thomas Henle from the Technical University of Dresden, who is a Food chemistry professor, and germany’s Federal Food chemical Society chairman, found out honey from the manuka flower contained a naturally occurring compound known for its antibacterial properties – nutritional methylglyoxal.
Methylglyoxal levels can be reliably measured and scientifically proven and is now a measure of antibacterial property, according to new Zealand Ministry of Primry industries ( MPi).
in short, zero or low levels of methylglyoxal mean it isn’t genuine manuka honey or has only a very small amount of manuka honey blended with other honeys.
Methylglyoxal levels of 100mg/ kg and higher guarantee it is genuine manuka honey with proven antibacterial activity.
The higher the methylglyoxal level, the higher the antibacterial strength. For example, MgO 250+ Manuka Honey has been tested and certified to contain at least 250mg/ kg of nutritional methylglyoxal, the minimum level required for health benefits.
Manuka health
MgO Manuka Honey is the only food in the world to show significant amounts of nutritional
methylglyoxal content. Manuka Health was the first company in the world to produce manuka honey of varying potency graded according to its methylglyoxal content, measured using standards developed by the Technical University of Dresden.
Manuka Health, founded in 2006 by its chief executive officer kerry Paul, is now one of the world’s largest manuka honey companies and the largest customised honey facility in new Zealand. its facility combines internationally accredited laboratories, honey- drum storage, blending, packing and distribution under one roof.
Manuka Health developed a range of innovative natural products based on scientific evidence of natural bioactives and effectiveness of MgO Manuka honey. its product range includes MgO certified Manuka honey and personal care products such as MgO Manuka honey moisturising cream, MgO Manuka honey body
lotion, MgO Manuka honey propolis toothpaste and other MgO-certified healthcare products.
Honey is approach to fight antibiotic resistance
A few studies have examined the effect of manuka honey on biofilms, showing it to be active against a range of bacteria.
According to a study presented at the 247th national Meeting of the American chemical Society ( AcS), the levels of the principle antibacterial components in the honey, MgO and hydrogen peroxide, acidity and osmotic effect, high sugar concentration and polyphenols actively kill bacterial cells.
According to Salve Regina University Department of chemistry assistant professor Susan Meschwitz, the unique property of honey lies in its ability to fight infection on multiple levels, making it more difficult for bacteria to develop resistance. The higher concentrations of all honeys
were necessary to eliminate established biofilms compared to those needed for prevention, as assessed by both quantification of biofilm biomass and cell viability.
Manuka honey was the most effective honey to stop bacterial resistance to antibiotics. it is believed that MgO is the primary components in manuka- type honeys responsible for its anti- biofilm activity.
Manuka Health medicinal- grade Manuka honey has an amazing range of therapeutic and healing properties.
Apart from Manuka honey range in natural form, Manuka Health has innovatively produced a wide range of other natural products, which includes suckles, natural skin care, oral care and wound care products.
