Farewell to joint troubles

Veronica Albela is now free of joint pains.

VERONICA Albela first started experiencing arthritis in her right knee when she was 48 years old.

She says, “People don’t immediately see anything wrong with me but on the inside I felt like a handicapped person. Things that most people take for granted such as walking and going up the stairs were a daily struggle for me.”

It is overly simplistic to say arthritis causes joints to lose function because the cartilage layer in between the bones gets worn down over time.

It is largely due to an enzyme found in joints called jointageing enzymes or known scientifically as matrix metalloproteinases ( MMP enzymes).

MMP enzymes break down joints and these enzymes normally exist in our joints in a balanced state as it is involved in frequent joint remodelling processes.

However, when the body begins producing too much of these enzymes, the joints break down faster than they can rebuild.

Joint damage and inflammation ensue, leading to joints degradation and hence, symptoms of pain, stiffness and swollen joints.

When this situation persists, bone spur formation takes place. Bone spurs are tiny pointed outgrowths of bone caused by local inflammation and may cause numbness, tenderness, limited joint movement and great pain.
