Stamp of Irish skills
WHEN one thinks of Ireland, one immediately thinks of leprechauns and Guinness.
While there’s no doubt that “legendary little people dressed in green” and the creamy dark ale are universally and uniquely identifiable as Irish, Ireland is also known for its long and illustrious history in influencing thought and practice in the areas of literature, the arts, science and education.
Educational excellence has long been a priority for this island in the North Atlantic, just west of Great Britain.
Ireland has always had a strong commitment to education as an engine for growth and development.
The country enjoys a very high rate of participation in tertiary education and invests heavily in educational infrastructure.
Ireland’s leading universities, most hundreds of years old are widely recognised as being among the best in the world.
Famously celebrated as the Island of “Saints and Scholars”, this country of just over four million people already boasts 10 Noble prizewinners for Peace, Literature and Physics including George Bernard Shaw, W. B. Yates, Samuel Beckkett and Ernest Walton.
Other famous Irishmen include George Boole who developed Boolean Algebra and engineer Peter Rice who helped create the Sydney Opera House and the Louvre.
These two gentlemen are counted as pioneers in the field of mathematics and engineering respectively.
Global recognition
In Malaysia, the Irish Universities and Medical Schools Consortium ( IUMC) represents four of Ireland’s oldest and most prestigious universities namely: > National University of Ireland, Galway > Trinity College Dublin > University College Cork > University College Dublin A degree from any of these outstanding schools is globally recognised.
A wide range of undergraduate courses are offered including medicine, dentistry and health sciences, science and engineering, arts and social sciences, and law, to name but a few.
Perhaps unique to the Irish education system, these universities share a strong ethos for hands- on learning and creating learning environments that encourage innovation and creation.
While a world- class educational qualification is what a student will obtain at the end of his course, the equally important aspect of learning the cultural identity of Ireland, as well as the ability to relate to an increasingly global world is what is impressed upon IUMC students.
The Irish people are known for their warm, welcoming hospitality and conversation and culture are very important features of Irish life.
Foreign students who have Englishspeaking backgrounds will find communicating in Ireland easy as it is an English- speaking country and the medium of instruction is English.
