Primed for IBDP
SUNWAY International School ( SIS) has built its success since 2008 by offering one of the most respected curricula in the world – the Ontario ( Canada) Secondary School programme.
A diverse student body from more than 30 countries, foreign- trained staff and an internationally recognised curriculum contribute to making SIS an outstanding international school.
The unique Ontario approach focuses on students’ continuous development, with formative assessments that are cumulative and consistent, derived primarily from coursework, and a final portion allotted to an end- ofsemester evaluation.
Early exposure to this style of practical assessment endows students with smart study skills as well as real- world knowledge to develop critical thinking and deep reflection, preparing them early for university.
Inspired by this standard, SIS’ newest initiative is to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme ( IBDP) next year.
The recent consultant’s visit from the IB Organisation has affirmed that SIS is well prepared to apply for IB World School authorisation.
With everything in place, SIS anticipates the authorisation to be granted in advance for the inaugural intake in January next year.
The Canadian ( Ontario) teaching philosophy dovetails with the curricular expectations, frameworks and IB learner profile of the IBDP.
“We have some of the besttrained, knowledgeable teachers anywhere who are already delivering the Canadian curriculum.
“I couldn’t be more confident in the success of the new IBDP curriculum and the continuing Ontario curriculum, both being taught here at SIS,” says deputy principal Heath Kondro.
SIS teachers help develop students into problem- solvers, creative thinkers and risk- takers by using modern, dynamic teaching methods to help students take ownership of their own learning.
In addition, all of the teachers who will be delivering the IBDP have undergone training in the specific IB subjects that they will be teaching.
To meet the demands of the new programme and increasing enrolments, the school has recently completed an extensive renovation with two new science laboratories in addition to the existing three science laboratories.
The East Building boasts a new and improved library, black box drama room, music room and 11 spacious classrooms.
Many of the goals in the IBDP – to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young individuals to positively impact the communities they live in – parallel the objectives in the Ontario Secondary School curriculum practised at SIS.
The IBDP requires students to study multiple subject disciplines, which eventually leads to examinations after two years of rigorous study.
Students explore the connections between these areas through a global lens, reflect critically on aspects of knowledge, pursue independent research, and have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills through local and community service.
As the overall education philosophies, curricula content and delivery model of both the IB and Ontario programmes are substantially similar, compatible and interchangeable, students may transfer from one programme to the other with relative ease.
In this curriculum delivery model, all students can continue accumulating credits and be eligible to receive the Ontario Secondary School Diploma ( OSSD), while those who so choose may pursue the IB Diploma.
Together, both these programmes assure students of sound progression pathways to higher study, as the global recognition of these qualifications pave the way for students to pursue specialisations in their chosen field of study at prestigious educational institutions anywhere in the world.
To ensure a smooth entrance into and readiness for IBDP, students will be assessed with readiness assessments designed and administered by the teaching staff.
Interested students may register their interest by calling 03- 7491 8070 and take the readiness assessment during the SIS Application Week from May 30 to June 3. For more information, visit www. sis. sunway. edu. my/ AppWeek.
