Who knows how Wu Fung became known as Bowie Who? Not many people do. In fact, even the veteran entertaine­r himself did not. When asked about it, the 84- year- old Hong Kong star, whose real name is Wu Kai- Sau, confessed that he was just as perplexed as to the origins of the name.

“People used to asked me whether I had an English name. I would say yes, it’s Wu Fung. Then, someone told me that there were people who were saying that my name was Bowie. I tried to trace the origins, but couldn’t find the source. And it spread so fast that people from Singapore, Malaysia and America were all calling me Bowie. So, I had no choice but to go with it.” CANTOPOP legend George Lam is celebratin­g 40 years in the music industry with a world tour that will come to the Arena of Stars in Genting Highlands on Sept 17.

At 68, Lam continues to wow audiences with his power- packed vocals. He kick- started his anniversar­y tour at the Hong Kong Coliseum in January this year, selling out all four nights.

To commemorat­e his four decades in the music industry, the veteran singer- songwriter even recorded a new concert theme song, which is a medley of his popular hits in the vein of his much- loved 10 minutes, 12 inches.

For the past four decades, Lam and his songs have remained popular in Hong Kong and he has won several awards at the RTHK Top 10 Gold Songs Awards. In 1994, in recognitio­n of his numerous contributi­ons to the music scene, Lam was awarded the Golden Needle Award, the highest form of recognitio­n in the Hong Kong music industry.

Apart from an illustriou­s singing career, Lam is also a popular actor who has starred in numerous films and tv series; he received a nod for Best Actor at the 2nd Hong Kong Film Awards for Boat People ( 1982).

Besides Malaysia, Lam plans to take his anniversar­y tour to Singapore, America, Canada, and Macau.
