Bragging rights to natural goodness
DESPITE modern medical breakthroughs, some humble folk remedies manage to endure.
One of the best is Apple Cider Vinegar ( ACV).
First used by Hippocrates as a curative tonic in 400BC, in 2009, scientists begun looking afresh at this inexpensive health drink and uncovered unexpected health benefits.
Recently, Japanese researchers observed that ACV’s acetic acid switches on genes are key to the manufacture of fatty acid oxidation enzymes.
These enzymes act as catalysts and can boost metabolism, block the body’s storage of incoming dietary fat, break down and dissolve existing body fat.
This discovery builds on a study at Australia’s University of Sydney – subjects who consumed two tablespoons of ACV daily experienced fewer surges and crashes in blood sugar levels.
They also took 1,400 fewer calories per week than volunteers in the control group.
A reason for this is because ACV contains rich potassium, an alkalising mineral that heightens cell sensitivity to glucose- regulating insulin.
Benefits of consuming ACV internally include:
> Helps to slow down the onset of old age
> Rids body of dangerous toxic waste by cell purification > Relieves headaches > Helps keep blood at the right consistency
> Helps to maintain body’s acidalkaline balance
> Regulates menstruation – beneficial to women > Helps to combat constipation > Helps to normalise urine, counteracts frequent urge to urinate
> Helps prevent obesity and combat under- weight > Fights arthritis and gout > Fights gallstones and kidney stones.
For these benefits, mix a teaspoon of ACV with a teaspoon of raw honey in a glass of distilled water and consume two or more times daily.
It can also be used in salad dressings and daily cooking.
ACV also helps food digestion and assimilation – for that, take a tablespoon of distilled water with one- third teaspoon of ACV five minutes before meal time.
Retain the mixture in mouth for a few seconds before swallowing.
The best type of AVC is made from organically grown whole apples, with no chemicals or preservatives added, is not pasteurised and which contains the “mother of vinegar”.
The “mother of vinegar” is a natural gelatinous substance formed during the fermentation step.
It occurs naturally as strands of connected protein molecules and is the most nutritious part of the ACV.
