Psychology with a global twist

-

IF you are looking to pursue a career as a research or professional psychologist, Monash University Malaysia’s Bachelor of Psychological Science ( BPsychSci) with an added global perspective may just be the right course for you.

Dr Miriam Sang- Ah Park, senior lecturer at the Department of Psychology, shares that while the programme is offered by the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, it will have added components of science, arts and social sciences to make it more comprehensive.

Broad- based curriculum

“This degree has much adaptability and enables students to branch off into other areas,” says Dr Park.

The BPsychSci aims to give students a broad- based knowledge of all the different areas of psychology and the discipline’s current developments.

Some subjects covered include personality, social and cognitive psychology, mental health in the community, psychological testing and ethics, health psychology, biology, and subjects tackling global issues such as migration, child and women trafficking as well as war and terrorism.

While the BPsychSci’s content is derived from Monash Australia’s psychology degree, it has also been contextualised to Malaysia and the region.

You will benefit from a strong academic team of PhD ( Doctor of Philosophy) holders who are active in various research fields – from autism, sleep and gambling to family characteristics, domestic violence and cognitive research.

As a result, you will have the opportunity to assist as research assistants to gain experience, in addition to being able to fasttrack your academic pursuits in research.

“Students will be able to have face- to- face conversations with us all the time and work with us on research studies even from year one, if they are really interested,” explains Dr Park.

Endless opportunities

Dr Park shares that opportunities abound for graduates as employers like psychology graduates because they understand human behaviour and have acquired social skills to work and interact with others.

You can find employment in business, social and health fields as well as international organisations such as in human resources, marketing, advertising, education, research and social services.

Offered as a full- time course over three years, the BPsychSci degree gives you the option to apply for entry to other fourth year programmes in psychology, such as the psychology honours course, after which you can proceed to a master’s degree and work towards being a registered psychologist or even go on to do your PhD.

After almost 10 years, the discipline of psychology within the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences is now known as the Department of Psychology.

“We want to be a leading provider of education in psychology and professional counselling, with a high- quality learning environment that will make a positive contribution to the growth of the country, region and globally,” says Assoc Prof Shamsul Haque, head of the Department of Psychology.

To speak to course counsellors and academic first- hand, visit the Monash Application Day happening on Aug 20 from 11am to 4pm.
