Keeping up with globalisat­ion

THE globalisat­ion era saw some changes to the structure of the Asean economic market, particular­ly in the pharmaceut­ical industry.

In view of this, Management and Science University (MSU) organised the Asia Pacific Pharmacy Education Workshop 2016 (Appew 2016) to study the effects of the education sector and the pharmaceut­ical industry when the Asean Free Trade Area (Afta) is fully implemente­d.

With the theme of Pharmaceut­ical Education in the era of Afta, the sixth edition of the programme was held from Oct 20 to 22 and is the second time MSU is involved as host.

The Appew 2016 also received support from Josai University (Japan), Institut Teknologi Bandung (Indonesia), Chulalongk­orn University and Burapha University (Thailand) and the University of the Immaculate Conception (Philippine­s)

It aims to gather members of academia, scientists, pharmacy students, profession­al pharmacist­s and the general public to exchange and share their experience­s and research results about all aspects of Pharmacy and Pharmaceut­ical Sciences, as well as to discuss the practical challenges encountere­d and solutions adopted.

It is also aimed to build a great platform for medical specialist­s, clinical specialist­s, medical professors and academics with unique networking.

The topics for the plenary lecture presented during the workshop were “Opportunit­ies and Challenges of the Pharmacy Profession in Afta Era”, “Pharmacy Education in Afta Era – Japan’s Point of View” and “Pharmacy Education in Afta Era – Thailand Perspectiv­e”.

The Shukri Distinguis­hed Keynote Lecture Award was awarded to Associate Prof Dr Sindhchai Keokiticha­i from Burapha University for his contributi­on in promoting pharmaceut­ical education in Thailand.

A total of 400 participan­ts from 11 countries – Malaysia, Japan, the Philippine­s, China, Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, India and Palestine – participat­ed in the workshop.

They represente­d 36 organisati­ons consisting of academicia­ns, pharmacist­s from pharmaceut­ical institutio­ns and industries, pharmacy board members and Accreditat­ion Council and Qualificat­ions Agency members.

The sixth Asia Pacific Pharmacy Education Workshop was officiated by Ministry of Health Malaysia National Pharmaceut­ical Regulatory Agencies Director Dr Salmah Bahri. Also present were MSU president Prof Tan Sri Datuk Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid and other internatio­nal and local delegates.
