Keeping up with globalisation
THE globalisation era saw some changes to the structure of the Asean economic market, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry.
In view of this, Management and Science University (MSU) organised the Asia Pacific Pharmacy Education Workshop 2016 (Appew 2016) to study the effects of the education sector and the pharmaceutical industry when the Asean Free Trade Area (Afta) is fully implemented.
With the theme of Pharmaceutical Education in the era of Afta, the sixth edition of the programme was held from Oct 20 to 22 and is the second time MSU is involved as host.
The Appew 2016 also received support from Josai University (Japan), Institut Teknologi Bandung (Indonesia), Chulalongkorn University and Burapha University (Thailand) and the University of the Immaculate Conception (Philippines)
It aims to gather members of academia, scientists, pharmacy students, professional pharmacists and the general public to exchange and share their experiences and research results about all aspects of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, as well as to discuss the practical challenges encountered and solutions adopted.
It is also aimed to build a great platform for medical specialists, clinical specialists, medical professors and academics with unique networking.
The topics for the plenary lecture presented during the workshop were “Opportunities and Challenges of the Pharmacy Profession in Afta Era”, “Pharmacy Education in Afta Era – Japan’s Point of View” and “Pharmacy Education in Afta Era – Thailand Perspective”.
The Shukri Distinguished Keynote Lecture Award was awarded to Associate Prof Dr Sindhchai Keokitichai from Burapha University for his contribution in promoting pharmaceutical education in Thailand.
A total of 400 participants from 11 countries – Malaysia, Japan, the Philippines, China, Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, India and Palestine – participated in the workshop.
They represented 36 organisations consisting of academicians, pharmacists from pharmaceutical institutions and industries, pharmacy board members and Accreditation Council and Qualifications Agency members.
The sixth Asia Pacific Pharmacy Education Workshop was officiated by Ministry of Health Malaysia National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agencies Director Dr Salmah Bahri. Also present were MSU president Prof Tan Sri Datuk Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid and other international and local delegates.
