IF you are looking for a new smartphone, especially one that you can customise and upgrade, then the new Moto Z and Z Play might be the devices to look forward to.

The smartphones accept modules called Moto Mods such as JBL SoundBoost, which gives your phone more powerful stereo sound, Insta-Share Projector which turns the phone into a 70in projector, or Incipio offGRID Power Pack (2,200mAh) for extending battery life.

The standout module is the Hasselblad True Zoom which is a souped up lens capable of 10x optical zoom. In addition, the Hasselblad allows you to capture in RAW format for the best image quality.

“Owners do not have to worry as the Moto Mods will be compatible with the Moto Z family smartphones released in the future,” says Lenovo mobile business group Asia Pacific marketing manager Kaylie Wong.

Those who wish to customise their phones can opt for the Style Shell back covers such as Charcoal Ash, Silver Oak and Crimson Ballistic Nylon.

The flagship Moto Z, which the company claims is the world’s thinnest premium smartphone at only 5.2mm, is made from military aircraft grade aluminium and stainless steel.

It has a 5.5in quad-HD Amoled display with a 1,440 x 2,560-pixel resolution, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 and 4GB RAM.

For optics, the Moto Z has a 13-megapixel camera with a large f/ 1.8 aperture for better low-light photography and a wide-angle 5-megapixel front-facing camera ideal for group selfies.

It also has a fingerprint reader, 64GB internal storage (expandable up to 2TB via microSD) and 2,600mAh battery.

The Moto Z Play, on the other hand, has a 5.5in full HD Super Amoled display. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor and has 3GB RAM.

The rear camera is 16 megapixels, and uses laser and phase detect autofocus for sharper photos. On the front, it comes with a 5-megapixel wide-angle camera.

The battery for the Z Play is larger too at 3,510mAh which the company claims is able to last up to 45 hours. It also has a fingerprint sensor and 32GB internal storage (expandable up to 2TB with microSD card).

Both phones are protected with water repellent nano-coating.

The Moto Z and Z Play are priced at RM2,699 and RM1,799, respectively and will go on sale at the end of this month.

For the Moto Mods, the SoundBoost speaker is priced at RM599, Hasselblad at RM1,299, Insta-Share at RM1,399 and Incipio at RM499. The price for the back covers start at RM59.

Those who are interested in getting their hands on either phone can pre-order on 11street and Lazada starting now. The first 50 pre-order customers on each site will receive a free SoundBoost module.
