Lulu The Movie

- – Seto Kit Yan

WHAT’S there not to like about Lulu? For a character that was originally created for a TV skit, Lulu is really quite a gem. Effortlessly flamboyant and gregarious, Lulu makes a successful transition to the big screen with her larger-than-life persona.

Once you get to know Lulu, she just grows on you. Big hair. Fancy headbands. Bling-bling. Leopard prints. Bright colours. Shiny fabrics. Caricature or not, Lulu has a passion for fashion that makes her a naturally distinctive personality while her cheery Chinglish and Oriental outlook remain her most endearing charms.

Needless to say, filmmaker Michelle Chong has outdone herself with this rags-to-riches romantic comedy, where she plays Lulu as well as Sonia, a snobbish Singaporean TV host who does not seem to have any redeeming qualities.

Briefly, the movie is about a woman from China who flies all the way to Singapore to meet her online boyfriend. She soon discovers that nothing is going the way she expected and realises that she has been duped. But what she does after this setback is what makes her a keeper. Lulu is such a heart-warming soul that you want her to succeed because she is so sweet.

The wonderful thing about Lulu is that she always remains true to herself, making the most of what she’s got and always finding something to smile about. Surely the world would be a much better place if everyone had someone like Lulu in their lives.
