ORIENTAL fashion often callsc to mind the image of women in elegant outfits designed to flatter natural curves. Monica Quen’s creations are not any different. They also come with a twist. Often, this is in the form of a modern silhouette, strategically placed panel or cutout. Younger patterns and colours are used too, matched with embroidery, hand painting or beading. Established in 2004 in Mal aysia, the label has enjoyed a loyal and growing customer base. The founder herself is said to be naturally stylish. She studied fashion design at the Saint Martin’s School O f Art in London. Every design appare ntly represents her – from basics that can be paired or layered, to one-o of-a-kind pieces thatt are painstakingly embellished by hand. That said, it is her cheongsams that are all the rage. While lovely throughout the year, Chinese New Year is when Monica Quen really revs it up. Extra vivid colours are used, as are eye-catching prints that will surely turn heads at reunion dinners.

Customers are advised to drop by early when the Chinese New Year ranges are released as sizes run out fairly quickly. Even the opening hours at the flagship store in Medan Damansara, Kuala Lumpur is extended.

That’s not all though. The Monica Quen label also happens to offer matching oriental-inspired accessories and furniture to complement their fashion range. Talk about going all out for the New Year!
