EDUCATION GUIDE Passport to a global job market
RECOGNISED throughout the world as a mark of quality, an American degree is a passport to today’s global job market.
The American Degree Transfer Programme (ADTP) under the Centre for American Education (CAE) at Sunway University offers a smooth and quick pathway for students to pursue their degree at the university of their choice in the United States.
At Sunway University, the programme accepts students for all majors and requires them to enrol for core subjects and liberal arts courses. For most majors, students spend the first two years of their studies locally and the final two years in the US.
The flexibility of ADTP, however, allows other transfer options for some US universities. For instance, students can complete one year of their studies in Malaysia and continue the last three years in the US.
Students who meet the required academic grades have the privilege of transferring to a wide range of universities in the US, Canada and elsewhere.
Patterned after the American undergraduate degree programme, Sunway University’s ADTP provides students with a mixture of subject specific and general education courses, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the next phase of their studies abroad.
Apart from excelling academically, the university also encourages ADTP students to take part in extracurricular activities, including sporting events. In doing so, students commit themselves to learning and character-building outside the classroom.
Former ADTP student Maryann Kok Cher Ling shared that being involved in athletic activities during her studies in Sunway helped her become a better person, personally and academically.
She was one of the swimmers who represented the Selangor team in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2016, winning two relay gold medals and two individual silver medals.
For Kok, her experience in Sukma 2016 helped foster skills that are useful in academic life. As an athlete, she undergoes 20 hours of training per week.
“It helps me develop time management skills as I have to balance between my studies and swimming,” she said.
The young swimmer strictly follows a set timetable and studies ahead to maintain a good balance between her academic and athletic commitments.
Currently enrolled at the University of Idaho, US, Kok plans to take part in other competitions during her studies in the US.
She hopes to gain more experience of other cultures, develop new friendships and broaden her horizons.
The first-hand experience gained in sporting events for students like Kok help them acquire the mix of knowledge, skills and understanding to live in and contribute to the global society.
At Sunway University, the ADTP strives to bring out the best of each student and equips them with the skills required to perform well academically. The programme was developed specifically to allow students to study the first part of their American degree at said university.
It has been designed in consultation with American universities to ensure that students can transfer seamlessly to the US to complete their studies.
