Heritage, results and growth
FOR over 50 years, the International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) has championed a holistic approach to education and growth.
Firmly rooted in its charter as a non-profit, parent-owned and parent-governed institution, ISKL is one of a few international schools in Kuala Lumpur whose sole purpose is to provide an excellent educational foundation for students.
In short, ISKL is built upon a legacy spanning more than 50 years that shapes it as an institution of educational excellence.
Its heritage is evident as the first fully accredited international school in Malaysia.
Opening its doors to 48 students in September 1965, ISKL’s first campus was an old palace built in the 1920s by the Sultan of Selangor. The school’s growth has been consistent from day one, its enrolments doubled within the first year.
Growing demand over the years has also led to its expansion into a larger facility now located in Ampang Jaya and the development of the Melawati elementary campus.
ISKL also enjoys the distinction of being the first and longest running International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma programme in Malaysia. In addition to this heritage, it operates on a “non-selective” basis, whereby any student can choose to take the IB Diploma course of study. This means that ISKL faculty work exceptionally hard to ensure that each student is mentored and supported through- out the rigorous course of study.
Despite offering the programme on a non-selective basis, ISKL graduates 98% of all full IB diploma students.
Over the years, ISKL has delivered on the promise of its mission, to provide “an exceptional education that challenges each student to develop the attitudes, skills, knowledge and understanding to become highly successful, spirited, socially responsible global citizen”. To continue to offer a world-class education for subsequent generations, the school has embarked on an aggressive plan of growth, building a new, top-notch educational facility in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
The new ISKL campus, which is expected to open in August 2018, will be set on about 25.7 acres (10.4ha) of land in Ampang Hilir and will have facilities that are unique and of world-class standards. Distinguishing elements include the centre for performing arts, which consists of a 650-seat theatre, concert recital hall, black box theatre and atrium amphitheatre.
The new campus will also be furnished with an aquatics complex that houses a 50m Olympic-size competition pool, a 25m daily activity pool and a swimming pool for young learners. Furthermore, it will be the first Malaysian school designed to achieve platinum for the Green Building Index (GBI) construction status with environmentally sustainable concepts. This design also includes world-class science labs and classrooms with flexible teaching spaces, two libraries, gymnasiums, tennis courts, regulation tracks and playing fields. With the new campus, ISKL aims to continue the heritage of exceptional international education and a diverse learning environment.
ISKL invites you to come see for yourself why it is the international school of choice in Kuala Lumpur. For a start, come and experience its elementary school Open Day on Feb 13 (Monday) at 10am at Melawati Campus, Taman Melawati, Kuala Lumpur.
