A-frame: A perfectly-shaped wave breaking both left and right.

Bailing: To let go of your surfboard.

Crest: The highest point of a wave.

Drop in: To get in the right of way of a surfer who is already riding a wave. This isn t advisable surfers may be easy-going out of the water but they are hugely competitiv­e when chasing a wave and may knock you over.

Eskimo roll: To get a longboard through a breaking wave, the surfer rolls the board over in front of the oncoming wave, and then hangs under the board until the wave has passed before rolling back.

Fins: Hydrofoils at the tail of a surfboard to improve stability and control of the fins.

Grommet: oung surfer. Sometimes shortened to grom .

Hang loose: A Hawaiian expression for a relaxed, easy-going and carefree attitude.

Inside: The takeoff position on a wave closest to the curl than any other surfer. Also caught inside being located inshore of the breaking waves or inside the impact one or break line.

Jake: A very Australian slang, a ake is somebody who unconsciou­sly causes trouble for his or her fellow surfers. A ake is usually a beginner surfer surfers use ake similar to how neti ens use newbie.

Kahuna: A wi ard or magician in the water.

Leash: The cord that attaches your leg to your surfboard.

Line-up: The spot in the ocean where surfers line up to catch waves, ust behind the breaking one.

Monsoon: The season every Malaysian surfer looks forward to every year.

Nose: The front of the board.

Ombak: or surfers, the bigger the wave the better

Pop-up: The uick move a surfer makes to rise to a standing position when taking off on a wave.

Qimby: A novice, and often annoying, surfer.

Rash guard: A form-fitting shirt made of nylon-polyester-spandex mixture used under the wetsuit.

Shaka: A Hawaiian hand gesture used to say hello , great , cool and all right

Stoked: Enthusiast­ic, exhilarate­d, or excited.

Turtle roll: A surfing techni ue where the surfer flips the board over in front of an oncoming wave to get under it.
