SUPERMAN and Lois Lane, SpiderMan and Mary Jane Parker, Cyclops and Jean Grey, Green Arrow and Black Canary, The Flash and Iris West, Mr Fantastic and Invisible Woman, these comic-book couples have stood the test of time, and earned their status as pop culture legends.

However, there is a lot more to comics than superheroes, and the ones we’ve mentioned above have been written about to death already.

So, for this Valentine’s Day, we decided to focus on couples in comics by other publishers instead, notably those in the more mature Vertigo and Image Comics titles. Some are quite unlikely and unconventional, but they each have love stories that are unique and inspirational at the same time.

Bigby Wolf and Snow White (

Fables)

He: The Big Bad Wolf, who will huff and puff his way to your heart.

She: The fairest of them all, with a soft spot for apples.

Better together: Fable s may have ended already, but Bigby and Snow’s romance will always be dear to us. It’s a relationship that stood the test of time, fairy-tale war, darkness, and even the tragic death of a child; and will be revered as a tale as old as time for fans everywhere.

Matty Roth and Zee Hernandez (

DMZ)

He: A rookie photojournalist left stranded on the island of Manhattan, which has been declared a demilitarised zone (DMZ) after a bloody civil war in the United States. Matty is the only journalist reporting out of the DMZ.

She: A medical student who stayed behind in the DMZ to offer help to victims of the war. Zee is one of the first people Matty meets in the DMZ, and she reluctantly becomes his guardian and guide.

Better together: Brian Wood’s gritty war series may seem like an unlikely source for a love story, but the relationship between the impressionable Matty and the streetwise Zee is one that is quite important to the story. The two of them do not have the most positive of relationships, but the more turbulent Matty’s life becomes while in the DMZ, the more important his relationship with Zee becomes, as she keeps him grounded in a wartorn world filled with violence, fascism and hatred.

Tony Chu and Amelia Mintz (

Chew)

He: Tony Chu is a “cibopath”,
