Reunion bash for engineering alumni from UNMC
THE University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) alumni from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering had a reunion with previous professors, course mates and industrial partners of the department at a networking luncheon, co-hosted by the school and Crops for the Future Research Centre.
The alumni-industrial partner networking session included UNMC’s vice-provost (Research and Knowledge Exchange) Prof Claire O’Malley, Crops for the Future’s chief executive officer Prof Sayed Azam-Ali and its research theme head Dr Ebrahim Jahanshiri.
Also present was Datuk Alexander Arjun De Raj, managing director of Global Energy Opportunities, who represented Gryphon Energy’s chairman Datuk Nagendran Nadarajah and alumni from as far back as 2006. During the session, Prof Sayed presented a talk on the role and agenda of CFF in promoting alternative crops and its achievements in leading many initiatives at an international level while Dr Ebrahim gave a briefing on how engineers and software designers are able to participate in CropBASE research theme in CFF.
Both presentations were eye-openers, especially for the UNMC alumni, with regard to the true status of food security worldwide.
The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering’s academic Prof Dino Isa shared that its alumni still communicate with UNMC and its faculty after all these years.
“They started off as undergraduates and became our colleagues, research collaborators and industrial partners. Most importantly, they remain our friends and staunch supporters of the department and university, maintaining a relationship that stood the test of time and the ups and downs of life.
“We are very proud of our former students. They have graduated and are now exceptional human beings. We hope that this event that brings together former students and current industrial partners will lead to more innovations and a better future for us all,” said Prof Dino.
Prof O’Malley said: “The University of Nottingham alumni make up a high-calibre network in corporate and research fields.
“Those who gathered with us for this networking event are a testament to their success and their eagerness not only to develop themselves further but to remain as active players in knowledge exchange among their peers.”
Also at the event were UNMC’s dean of engineering Prof Andy Chan, Telekom Malaysia’s general manager of risk management Azizul Rahman, Infineon Melaka’s principal staff engineer Khairi John, Wood Group’s automation and control technical authority Rahul Gupta, UNMC head of business engagement and innovation services Prof Denny Ng, UNMC’s former dean of engineering Prof Michael Cloke and Intelligent Systems Research Group’s head Dr Rajprasad Rajkumar.
