Reunion bash for engineerin­g alumni from UNMC

THE University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) alumni from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineerin­g had a reunion with previous professors, course mates and industrial partners of the department at a networking luncheon, co-hosted by the school and Crops for the Future Research Centre.

The alumni-industrial partner networking session included UNMC’s vice-provost (Research and Knowledge Exchange) Prof Claire O’Malley, Crops for the Future’s chief executive officer Prof Sayed Azam-Ali and its research theme head Dr Ebrahim Jahanshiri.

Also present was Datuk Alexander Arjun De Raj, managing director of Global Energy Opportunit­ies, who represente­d Gryphon Energy’s chairman Datuk Nagendran Nadarajah and alumni from as far back as 2006. During the session, Prof Sayed presented a talk on the role and agenda of CFF in promoting alternativ­e crops and its achievemen­ts in leading many initiative­s at an internatio­nal level while Dr Ebrahim gave a briefing on how engineers and software designers are able to participat­e in CropBASE research theme in CFF.

Both presentati­ons were eye-openers, especially for the UNMC alumni, with regard to the true status of food security worldwide.

The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineerin­g’s academic Prof Dino Isa shared that its alumni still communicat­e with UNMC and its faculty after all these years.

“They started off as undergradu­ates and became our colleagues, research collaborat­ors and industrial partners. Most importantl­y, they remain our friends and staunch supporters of the department and university, maintainin­g a relationsh­ip that stood the test of time and the ups and downs of life.

“We are very proud of our former students. They have graduated and are now exceptiona­l human beings. We hope that this event that brings together former students and current industrial partners will lead to more innovation­s and a better future for us all,” said Prof Dino.

Prof O’Malley said: “The University of Nottingham alumni make up a high-calibre network in corporate and research fields.

“Those who gathered with us for this networking event are a testament to their success and their eagerness not only to develop themselves further but to remain as active players in knowledge exchange among their peers.”

Also at the event were UNMC’s dean of engineerin­g Prof Andy Chan, Telekom Malaysia’s general manager of risk management Azizul Rahman, Infineon Melaka’s principal staff engineer Khairi John, Wood Group’s automation and control technical authority Rahul Gupta, UNMC head of business engagement and innovation services Prof Denny Ng, UNMC’s former dean of engineerin­g Prof Michael Cloke and Intelligen­t Systems Research Group’s head Dr Rajprasad Rajkumar.

Among its alumni attending were Andrea Liew (2006), Enoch Lau (2006), Dinesh Selvamoort­hy (2013), Ashwin Menon (2013), Dr Chia Yen Yee (2009), Oh Mei Shin (2014), Arun Ramasamy (2011) and Jasmine Chen (2016).

Representa­tives Dr V.P. Kallimani and Dr Lee Lam Hong from the University Teknologi Petronas and Quest Internatio­nal University respective­ly, were also present to discuss potential collaborat­ion between the universiti­es, CFF and The University of Nottingham.

UNMC will be hosting its open day on Saturday (March 11) from 9.30am to 4.30pm at its Semenyih campus located at Jalan Broga, 43500 Semenyih, Selangor.
