A rewarding pursuit

-

“MY experience at Sunway University was challenging but also very rewarding. I had the best time of my life studying in Sunway University. This is where I met a lot of people and made many friends.

“At times, balancing coursework can be challenging but it enabled me to grow as a person. I have no regrets studying here and if given the chance to choose again, I would still choose Sunway University,” says Neville Hew Lie Wie who has completed the BSc (Hons) Business Management at Sunway University.

According to Hew, he was interested to pursue the BSc (Hons) Business Management as one of his goals is to own a successful company.

“I had no passion in other fields of study such as medicine or engineering, so business management was attractive as it offered me a diverse and versatile career path,” he explains.

He found the programme full of challenges and surprises, adding that the most challenging task he faced was his final year research project. However, upon completion, he says he learnt a lot from it.

For Hew, the most interesting part of the programme was his internship, saying, “This is where students get to learn hands-on practical knowledge of business that cannot be learnt in the classroom.

“During internships, students can develop their skills in a setting where they are supervised by a workplace professional. In my case, I did my internship with Sunway Property under the supervision of a marketing manager.

“Assigned to the marketing and sales department, my work specialised in serviced apartments and condominiums. My job was to primarily carry out market research, conduct competitor analysis and investigate market activities.”

He adds, “I also assisted my work supervisor and colleagues with the launch of a new mixed development project. Throughout my internship, I was exposed to the ins and outs of the property industry in Malaysia.

“My supervisor took the effort to ensure that I understood the property industry clearly. In contrast to learning in the classroom, the internship encouraged me to learn by assuming responsibility and doing real work while applying the skills and knowledge learnt from my programme.”

Prior to his internship, Hew did not have a clear idea of what working in an office was like and often asked himself what he wanted do in the future.

“The internship provided me with a clearer picture of what working in a professional environment is like and the skills I have developed are transferable skills that I could apply in my future career path. Overall, it was a fruitful and eye-opening experience for me.

“The internship is also a great way to prepare students for the working world and for students to discover which sector or industry they would want to pursue after completing their degree,” he says.

Hew completed his A-Levels at Sunway College and enjoyed the experience so much that he decided to continue with the BSc (Hons) Business Management at Sunway University.

He recommends the BSc (Hons) Business Management programme to individuals who are interested in the field of business or are unsure of their future career path as the programme opens the door to many career choices.

His advice to students is to manage their time wisely when studying. “It is important to balance your study and social life. Study hard but do not forget to enjoy your time in university as it is true that one of the best times of your life is in university.”

Offered at the Sunway University Business School, the BSc (Hons) Business Management programme nurtures students with overall business-related knowledge as well as the skills and competencies to work for organisations or establish their own business.

Students in the programme are encouraged to explore business in the context of operation, management and evaluating business information.
