AT 61 years, nothing brings greater joy to Madam Sim than seeing her family enjoy her cooking.

However, it has been at least a year since she has been able to prepare a meal for them without suffering pain in her right knee.

It started four years ago, and she would experience deep stiffness in her knee that would take ages to normalise in the mornings. Over time, the symptoms became worse.

For an independent person like Sim, being unable to cook upsets her. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a long-term chronic disease characterised by deteriorating cartilage in joints, resulting in bones rubbing together and creating stiffness, pain and impaired movement.

The prevalence of OA is increasing due to population ageing and an increase in related factors such as obesity.

According to the United Nations, people aged over 60 will account for more than 20% of the world’s population by 2050.

Of that number, it is estimated that onethird of these people will be severely disabled by OA. Contrary to popular belief however, OA may not just be an ageing problem.

Science has discovered a group of degenerating enzymes known as Matrix Metalloproteinases or MMPs in joints that could be the culprit driving arthritis.

Human joints wear out during daily activities and MMP enzymes are responsible for cleaning up damaged cartilage cells during this process, hence its breakdown capacity.

However, when these MMP enzymes fail to “switch off ” once the job is done, prolonged joint degeneration results.

Presence of MMP enzymes prolongs inflammation, compounding pain, stiffness and swelling.

Discovering MMP enzymes was an important step in getting to the root cause of chronic joint pain.

Recent advancements in biotechnology found that an extract from Active New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel called Biolane is an effective MMP enzyme inhibitor. It can inhibit both MMP-1 and MMP-13, which trigger the development of chronic arthritis.

Biolane also has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and marine mineral healing actions making it a multi-acting, multibeneficial formula, enabling it to address various pathologies involved in joint degeneration.

Clinical studies show that Biolane delivers a 70% success rate when taken at a dose of two capsules twice daily for at least three months.

Though not a painkiller but a joint repairer, it works from the root of the problem, though taking longer time to effect.

Patients in pain may still need painkillers before Biolane’s benefits kick in.

Yet another advantage of Biolane is its stomach-protecting properties, which helps prevent damage from painkillers by more than 50%.

When MMP enzymes are in balance, patients find they will rely less on painkillers, or cease using altogether.

Sim’s son found out about Biolane, and although she was sceptical, she was touched by her son’s continued efforts to find a solution for her.

Nothing happened for the first two months, but she persevered. Then one evening, the family was surprised to learn Sim had spent the afternoon cooking, without complaining about her knee.
