Putting on a great design show

-

FIRST City University College recently held the 2017 edition of its annual Diploma Graduate Showcase featuring design artworks by 17 students from its Faculty of Design and Built Environment.

During the event, students studying Diploma in Interactive Design and Diploma in Interior Design programmes displayed their best design artwork and portfolios produced throughout their two-year study period.

The three-day event, open to the public, was attended by First City UC’s executive management team, members of the faculty, representatives from companies within the design industry looking for employable fresh talents and external examiners to assess the portfolios. Many of the students’ proud parents also turned up to view the outcome of their children’s education journey.

For these students, the showcase, themed “repre-sent” was an avenue to put on display works representing the essence of who they are – a collection of their skills, talents, personalities and ambitions.

During their studies, they have worked on many presentations for their coursework and the showcase was a way to symbolise the formal presentation of their hard work and passion.

The showcase was made even more memorable for the staff and students as this was the first event held at the faculty’s new White Canvas Gallery since its move to the Phase II building in March.

First City UC students, especially from the Design faculty, have been able to enjoy the new facilities as it offers more lecture rooms, studios and laboratories with state-of-theart equipment, a new library, IT Centre, MBA Centre, cafeteria, on-campus accommodation and indoor recreational courts.

Student committee president, Mandy Chan Wai Mun, said she was thrilled to organise and host this showcase together with her peers.

She shared, “For this showcase, we have been able to apply design skills we learnt as interactive and interior designers to put up a great show, which we are really proud of. We have worked hard together, struggled together and encouraged one another throughout the entire process of organising this event. What is more important is that this journey we took together will forever be in our memories; because above all else, and despite all the challenges we faced, the most important part is the fun we had together.”

Apart from the above Diploma programmes, First City UC’s Faculty of Design and Built Environment (FDBE) also offers Foundation in Art and Design programme leading to bachelor’s degree in Interior Architecture and Design, Graphic Design and Furniture and Product Design. These degree programmes are offered in collaboration with First City UC’s new United Kingdom university partner, the Manchester Metropolitan University, which commences in August.

In the near future, the faculty is also launching its first postgraduate programme, the MA Design Management as a pathway from the existing degree courses.
