A fair for the aces

-

STUDENTS from the Entrepreneurship Development class of Berjaya University College of Hospitality (Berjaya UCH) recently held its Young Entrepreneurs’ Fair at the campus. A delectable assortment of food and beverages were sold at the event – each of the concoctions was individually and innovatively “crafted” by the students.

Popularly known as the Young Entrepreneurs Fair, the fair is organised every semester by students of the Entrepreneurship Development class (diploma level). This event aims to provide Berjaya UCH students the opportunity to experience and immerse in the business world and to prepare them for the real world upon graduation. This is immersion learning at its best; bridging theory with practical knowledge to provide students with the most effective way of learning – Learning by Doing – the Immersion Methodology.

Themed “Ace of Spades”, this semester’s Young Entrepreneurs Fair saw the main area of Berjaya UCH’s campus decorated according to the theme with the paraphernalia of a casino. The decoration was conceptualised and put together by the students in the Diploma in Event Management programme with help from students in the Diploma in Public Relations programme. These students are known as the “organiser of the fair”, as they provided services such as promotional materials, entertainment throughout the fair and booths allocation with standard decoration for a service fee.

Students from Diploma in Pastry Management, Diploma in Hospitality, Diploma in Business Management and Diploma in Culinary Arts teamed up to set up their attractively adorned booths on the 11th floor of the campus. They are known as business owners – selling a wide variety of edibles from sushi to pizza, chocolate fondue to spring rolls, cookies to bubble tea and mocktails and more. The fair was held from 10am to 6pm.

Berjaya UCH’s dance club provided the opening performance of the day, bopping to the latest pop music to liven up the mood and entertain the crowd. Talented Gerda Anggun (no relations to the famous singer-songwriter Anggun), a Berjaya UCH student, was the solo performer serenading the audience with the latest hits and evergreens.

The final entertainment for the day was none other than Karmun Ooi, a YouTuber and a singer, who captivated the crowd with her sweet yet powerful voice and incredible talent. In between these performances, two movies were streamed, namely From Vegas to Macau and Now You See Me so the students could enjoy their meals while relaxing in between classes.

Berjaya UCH vice-chancellor Emeritus Professor Dr Walter Wong said, “Through this entrepreneurs fair, we hope to provide students a platform of opportunity to showcase their innovation and creativity as well as to put into practice what they have learnt in the past two years at Berjaya UCH. I’m proud to say that students have successfully transformed the entire campus in accordance to the chosen theme and it feels like a bustling marketplace where all the buying and selling takes place.”
