Providing an exceptional education

-

PRIVATE & International School Guide speaks to the International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL)’s head of school Dr Norma Hudson about the attributes of a great school and quality education.

What makes ISKL unique in this increasingly competitive marketplace?

ISKL consistently delivers a world-class curriculum and programmes that enable each student to maximise his or her potential.

Students at ISKL are taught by qualified and experienced educators who love what they do.

Seventy-four per cent of ISKL faculty hold master’s or doctorate degrees while 35% of our International Baccalaureate (IB) teaching faculty are IB examiners, grading IB students’ work from around the world.

ISKL’s IB Diploma scores consistently surpass world and Asia-Pacific averages. Furthermore, we have had students with perfect IB scores two years running.

Combine this with our broad range of extracurricular opportunities and a uniquely passionate community, and you have an exceptional ISKL education. August next year will see the heavily anticipated opening of the new Ampang Hilir Campus. What can we expect?

We have worked with global educational architects, technology experts, educators, parents and students to design the optimum learning environment.

It is built with one objective, which is to extend and enhance our ability to provide an exceptional education for each of ISKL’s students.

The campus is only 3km from KLCC, with a dedicated ISKL bus service that ensures the school is easily accessible from wherever you live in Kuala Lumpur. The campus is set on 25 acres (10.1ha) of land, giving our students outdoor and indoor spaces.

We have created a technologyrich learning environment adorned with leading-edge science and technology laboratories, a performing arts centre encompassing four distinct elements, indoor and outdoor sports complexes, and a three-pool aquatic centre.

What difference does being a not-for-profit school make?

Every cent goes directly into enhanced learning opportunities for students. There is transparency on how and where school fees are being spent.

We hire the best educators. We are blessed with a phenomenal ISKL community and I believe being not-for-profit has a huge impact, strengthening that essential partnership between school and family.

What is your advice on choosing the right school for your child?

Choosing the right school is about finding the environment that best fits your child to enable him to reach his potential and long-term goals.

Choosing a school that provides students with academic options, such as the IB, Advanced Placement (AP) courses or an individually tailored combination of both, can broaden your child's university options, from the United Kingdom or Europe to the United States, Canada, Australia and Hong Kong.

Our mission is to provide an

exceptional education that challenges each student to develop the attitudes, skills, knowledge and understanding to become a highly successful citizen.

What is next for graduating ISKL students?

The Class of 2017 has just graduated with 380 university acceptances. These include offers from the University of Cambridge, University of Edinburgh, Brown University, University of California, Berkeley, University of Chicago, University of Toronto and University of Melbourne.
