Grow your potential
I AM glad I did the Strathclyde MBA because I now have a postgraduate qualification from a reputable university, which enhances my career profile and allows me to be a corporate trainer if I decide to switch my career focus in the later years.
Being a professional with a finance and accounting background, it is essential for me to master non-financial skills such as corporate strategy, marketing, human resource and operation management to climb the corporate ladder.
I began my postgraduate study almost 14 years after obtaining my professional accountancy qualification.
The initial adjustment was painful but by trusting in God and having the discipline developed during the early years of my part-time professional study, I was able to overcome the challenges.
I chose to do my postgraduate study part-time as I had financial commitments to my family and would not want to interrupt my career progression.
Great companies become greater because they are capable of evolving their business models in times of crisis.
The Strathclyde MBA’s strong focus on corporate strategy exposed me to various strategymaking techniques practised by top organisations.
I had many opportunities to mingle with professionals from different backgrounds and age groups, exposing me to diverse ideas and opinions. I also built friendships that I hope will continue beyond graduation.
My role as the head of corporate finance, treasury and tax at Petronas Lubricants International Sdn Bhd involves determining the right capital structure, securing funding and ensuring that there is sufficient liquidity for the company’s operation. I also oversee the tax planning aspect of the company.
The Financial Management module of the Strathclyde MBA programme is relevant to my current responsibilities.
For those who are contemplating embarking on this journey, make sure you are disciplined and prepared to sacrifice your time to stay on course. – By Lawrence Hwee Kok Yoong, MBA graduate, University of Strathclyde
