Get the right hairstyle for you

-

YOUR hair is not known as your “crowning glory” for nothing. Your tresses are an integral part of how you look, and can make or break your overall appearance. If every day is a bad hair day, a hair makeover may be just what you need.

A new hairstyle can boost your confidence, make you look younger and reduce the amount of time and money you spend on hair care. But it doesn’t mean “cutting and pasting” your favourite celebrity’s hairdo onto your head without considering your own face shape, hair type and texture and lifestyle.

And as you search for a new hairstyle, don’t neglect the state of your hair. What you want is youthful-looking hair which is full-bodied, smooth, shiny and soft to the touch. Use the right products suited to your hair type or formulated to treat your hair problems, if any.

It may be easier to bring along some pictures of the hairstyle you have in mind as you discuss your new hairdo with your hairdresser. This may help to reduce some ambiguity as the same word may mean different things to the two of you. Explain what you like about the picture and ask if your hairstylist can adapt it to suit your hair.

Be realistic about the amount of time you can devote to recreating the new style at home. Looks can be deceiving and a simple style may actually require a pair of professional hands and a long list of equipment to execute it. If you don’t have time to blow-dry your hair every morning, opt for a washand-wear, low-maintenance style.

Invest in the right styling products like brushes, serum or flat iron to achieve the desired style. Ask your stylist to show you how you can vary your hair for fancy occasions like changing the parting or adding hair accessories.

Short hair should be trimmed every six weeks or so to maintain its shape. Longer hair can be cut less often, but trim away split ends if you have them. — The Straits Times/ Asia News Network
