An enriching learning experience
HAVING earned a prestigious scholarship, Ng Koi Kee, 22, could have chosen to pursue her Bachelor in Computer Science at any university but she chose to do so at Nilai University (Nilai U).
“After my SPM examinations, I had no idea what I should do next for my tertiary education,” said Ng.
“Then, I met a friend – a Nilai U graduate – who sang praises for the university. After a visit to the campus and a chat with faculty members, it was easy to see why,” she added.
The green and peaceful environment at Nilai U made Ng, who hails from Jerantut, Pahang, felt right at home.
Quality education
“At Nilai U, I received quality education and excellent pastoral care that allowed for personal growth and a chance to take part in a host of recreational activities. All these are offered within a safe, healthy and conducive environment,” said Ng.
Ng spent four years at Nilai U, starting with the Foundation in Science programme and then moving on to her degree.
Ng shared that she could always count on her lecturers for guidance whenever she had a problem.
She explained that the Computer Science curriculum at Nilai U placed a lot of emphasis on programming.
The help she received from her lecturers was crucial in helping her master programming and other challenging subjects.
“Some of the methods used to guide us, such as the MentorMentee programme, were really useful in helping the lecturers and students bond,” she added.
Ng emphasised that this cordial environment made it conducive for students, even the shy and apprehensive ones, to seek help from the lecturers.
The guidance Ng received had, in return, given her the motivation to serve as an instructor during the Game Programming Workshop organised by Nilai U’s Department of Computing.
“I was assigned as an instructor to guide secondary school students in using programming to produce a game,” she said, adding that her participation in such activities helped build her self-confidence and personal skills.
Ng pointed out that there was never a shortage of activities at her faculty.
“I attended an International Conference on Communication organised by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). I also took part in the IEEE Xtreme 9.0 Global Programming Competition, an international online competition held for 24 hours non-stop with competitors from all over the world,” she said.
Ng believes that students must seize the opportunity to take part in the many sports and recreational activities offered by the university.
Leadership skills
She herself learned teamwork and leadership skills by taking part in tchoukball.
“Tchoukball taught me how to be a humble leader, an effective communicator and a team player,” she said.
The Genesis Tchoukball Team from Nilai U is the current record holder in the men’s tchoukball championship category. Ng herself has played in many national level tchoukball championships.
When asked about her plans for the near future, Ng said that she intends to secure a career beyond Malaysian shores.
“There is a robust demand for Computer Science graduates. Employers are looking for talented individuals who are competent and confident,” she added.
Nilai U’s Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) programme prepares students for the real world.
Students have the opportunity to gain enhanced certifications, including the Novel Certified Linus Administrator (NCLA) and the Novel Certified Linus Professional (NCLP) certificates.
