Reputable university for medical studies
MANIPAL has been synonymous with high-quality medical education since the 1960s. For many Malaysians, it was the favoured destination for a superior education in medicine, dentistry and even engineering.
Manipal University, India, the parent institution for MelakaManipal Medical College (MMMC), celebrated its No.1 ranking among private universities of India in the Education World India Private University Rankings 2017 and Best Universities Survey 2017 (The Week).
Established 20 years ago, MMMC is now known as one of the best medical schools in Malaysia and provider of high-quality medical professionals to the local health system. MMMC’s reputation has spread far and wide with many of its alumni found across the globe.
Its reputation stems from its drive towards excellence in the services it provides to students, and its enviable record of awards and accolades are a showcase for its accomplishments.
MMMC’s programmes are unique in that the twinning feature requires students to go to India first and then return to Malaysia for the clinical training in local general hospitals. This is in reverse of the usual practice of twinning programmes in our country and it ensures that MMMC students get the best of both worlds.
Manipal has one of the largest Anatomy and Pathology museums in the world. With over 1,000 dissected specimens on display, it is deemed one of the best museums in Asia. The students perform real cadaver dissections during their learning at Manipal. It thus lays an excellent foundation in basic sciences in the first phase of their studies in Manipal, India, reinforced with thorough clinical training in Malaysian hospitals in the second phase.
MMMC commenced with the first batch of MBBS students in 1997 and since then, almost 3,500 graduates have passed through its hallowed corridors up to July. MMMC doctors are performing with distinction within the Malaysian health system and many have advanced to postgraduate level. To complement the success of the medical programme, Dentistry was introduced in 2009 and MMMC seems set to pursue the self-imposed high standards in dental education as well.
If the numbers clamouring for the programme are any indication, it seems that the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) is set to be another winner for MMMC.
Leveraging on Manipal’s reputation in India as the top dental school, MMMC has certainly modelled a winner. To improve chances for entry into the popular BDS, applicants are advised to sign up for the Foundation in Science programme (FiS). MMMC’s FiS is a oneyear pre-university course completed solely in the Melaka campus, which is set amid the serene surroundings of Bukit Baru. MMMC’s foundation course is unique and purpose-built to prepare students for the MBBS and BDS undergraduate degrees. The inclusion of subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology and Oral Biology at the foundation level provides a better insight into these subjects while preparing the students for the undergraduate programme.
Despite the rigours and intensity of the course, it is promising to note that the FiS has a remarkable success rate of 95% and above.
Students who have been through the foundation found that the solid groundwork has made for a steeper learning curve when they eventually move onto their degree studies.
Parents who would like their children to obtain the muchcoveted Manipal University degree would be glad to know that FiS students are given priority for MMMC’s MBBS and BDS programmes.
With a hallmark of academic excellence and an enviable record of accomplishment in providing quality medical and dental education, MMMC is committed to providing a curriculum that offers diverse learning opportunities.
The commitment to excellence is one that is “Inspired by Life” and tempered by ethical service to the nation and humanity.
Applications can now be submitted online to MMMC for the MBBS (October intake) via www.manipal. edu/melaka.
