Publika’s annual Halloween event is back and promises to be scarier than ever. This weekend, get spooked by haunted houses, story-telling sessions that will send shivers down your spine, go trick-or-treating, and check out the Halloween-themed bazaar curated by Makers & Co. For children, there is a Freaky Costume Parade on Saturday only; registration starts at 2pm.

The School will be transformed into a Japanese-themed setting for ShichiGo-San, a Japanese traditional cultural passage for girls aged three and seven, and boys aged three and five. There will be a customary prayer ceremony (packages are priced from RM20-RM50) conducted by Takebe Masahide, a shrine priest from Ikimi Tenmangu in Kyoto, Japan. Fun activities include kimono-dressing, origami and flute classes, soba- and sushi-making classes, Japanese arts and craft, Japanese folk dance. There will also be a tuna- and salmon-cutting show and an auction where parents get the chance to bid for their favourite slices. Time: 10am-6pm.

The KL Butoh Festival kicks off its 10th year with a double-bill performance, Earth Child by Koichi Tamano and Hiroko Tamano, and Wooden Face by NyobaKan. Other events held throughout the week include The Goddess of Mercy performance by festival director Lee Swee Keong, a photography exhibition If Life Likens a River... by DevLee and a painting exhibition titled Looking Within: Image Without by Loh Bok Lai. There will also be a masterclass by senior Butoh masters Koichi and Hiroko. The photography and painting exhibitions are free to the public. In support of The Befrienders Kuala Lumpur, this show is about a suicide case that becomes a national tragedy, and how six individuals are forced to confront the uncomfortable truths about who they are and what they have become. Silk & Strings is an immersive human experience with monologues, dialogues, songs and dances, and is narrated by a cello interpretation. Contains strong lan- guage. For ages 13 and above. This charity run, to be held on Saturday – in conjunction with Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Awareness Day – is organised by the Tissue Engineering Centre (TEC) of University Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre. The run is part of the fund-raising programme launched by TEC in June this year. It aims to create awareness and understanding of the TEC’s research and development efforts in regenerative therapy through stem cell and tissue engineering. There will be lucky draws, science quizzes and free health checks at the event.

Learn to live well despite advanced breast cancer: the workshop by the National Cancer Society Malaysia will cover topics such as understanding your rights as a patient, medication and palliative care. About 40% of breast cancer patients in Malaysia are diagnosed at advanced (III or IV) stages. The concert will open with Strauss’ Serenade For Winds, the work that launched his career after its premiere in 1882. This will be followed by his Horn Concerto No.2, a piece written in memory of his father, who played the horn. The MPO will feature Polish horn player Grzegorz Curyla for this work. Closing the show will be one of Beethoven’s favourite symphonies, Symphony No.3. Nicknamed Eroica, the 55-minute piece is by far the longest symphony written to date. The 16th edition of the Latin American Film Festival in Malaysia offers 12 movies screened for free. Organised by the Latin American and Caribbean Group (Grulac), which comprises the embassies from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, in Malaysia, this film festival offers a glimpse into cinema and culture from halfway around the world. Costa Rica, through their embassy in South Korea, and guest country South Africa, are also part of the film festival. All films will be screened with English subtitles. Choy Chun Wei’s large-scaled collage series is expanded in this exhibition through the assembling of more reliefs and greater overlaps. Drawing upon graphic design principles and inspired by architectural frameworks, the 12 works here accentuate the complexities and contradictions of life’s fragments. The well-known story of a boy who saves Temasek from a deadly swordfish attack is given a new lease of life in theatre veteran Kee Thuan Chye’s acclaimed play. This is the first time it will be performed in English here; a Mandarin adaptation was staged last year. In this contemporary update, wayang kulit and gamelan rap will be part of the storytelling.
