A premier, independent boarding school
OUNDLE School is one of Britain’s leading co-educational boarding and day schools for pupils aged 11-18. It is situated in the quintessentially English market town of Oundle, an hour from London by train. The school’s history dates back to 1556 when Oundle’s strong links with the Grocers’ Company of the City of London were established.
Beginning in the 20th century, Oundle School became famous thanks to headmaster F.W. Sanderson who established it as one of the great science and engineering schools.
This reputation still persists today.
In 2007, a major, ground-breaking science complex called SciTec opened, housing 16 state-of-the-art laboratories. Its second phase opened in September last year, which links the STEM subjects both philosophically and physically, with enhanced Design, Technology and Engineering facilities and a new purpose-built Mathematics department.
The school has embarked on an ambitious Sports Masterplan, that has to date resulted in the opening of JM Mills Cricket Pavilion, two additional astroturf pitches and 40 new cricket nets.
Future plans include an impressive sports centre, which will house a 50m pool, an eight-court sports hall, a fitness suite, dance studios and externally a new athletics facility. It is the third largest independent boarding and day school in England with 860 full boarders and 250 day pupils. It is renowned for its full boarding ethos and traditional British education.
As a full boarding school it attracts boarders from all over the UK, with 20% from 25 countries. One of the strengths Oundle School has is its community and the relationships between the pupils and the staff members. It employs the house system – each pupil is a member of either a boarding or a day house.
These warm and family-run communities offer pupils the confidence and sense of purpose towards fulfilment in the larger school community. Each house has roughly 60 girls or boys and is run by a housemaster or housemistress, supported by a team of experienced resident staff. There is also a mixed junior house for younger pupils.
Oundle School has a worldwide reputation for academic, musical and sporting excellence. Strong academic leadership combined with outstanding teaching extends and stretches pupils beyond examination results.
Each year 15-20 pupils win places at Oxford and Cambridge Universities with many more gaining places at top Russell Group universities.
The Sixth Form offers 28 subjects at A-Levels or pre-U standard.
Over half of all pupils play musical instruments and benefit from a partnership with the Royal College of Music in London.
Sport is integral, with rugby, cricket, soccer, hockey and rowing for boys, and hockey, netball, rowing and tennis for girls.
Options for extracurricular activities are vast.
The school’s head of international admissions Caitriona Redding will be in Malaysia on Nov 22 to meet potential students. The event, co-hosted by Britannia StudyLink, is open to all interested families.
