A GROUP comprising 18 IMI Diploma and Bachelor of Arts in International Hotel and Tourism Management students and two lecturers recently visited microbreweries and wineries in Melbourne Australia.

During the three-day educational trip, the students and lecturers from KDU Penang University College’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts visited three microbreweries and four wineries.

The microbreweries are Temple Brewing Co, Moon Dog Brewery and Stomping Ground Brewery in Melbourne, while the wineries include Seville Hill Winery, Killara Estate, Morgan Vineyards and Helen’s Hill Estate in Yarra Valley. Through the trip, the students experienced real-life vineyards, wineries and breweries, where they learnt about the origins, history and methods of wine-making and other beverages from each of the brewery and wineries.

The School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA) at KDU Penang University College, established in 1991, was the first to offer a Diploma in Hotel and Catering Management in northern Malaysia.

In 1997, endeavouring to be the best hospitality, tourism and culinary arts school in the region, KDU established a Swiss hotel school partnership with IMI Switzerland. The school believes that for students to succeed, they have to start from the top. It is the only school in Malaysia to offer a complete, internationally respected Swiss syllabus – birthplace of the flourishing global industry.

SHTCA’s partner school, IMI International Management Institute Switzerland, is a unique private school offering cutting edge hospitality education.

IMI is a renowned international hotel management school with strong links to all continents of the globe. IMI graduates can be found in senior management positions worldwide. Their success shows that to reach the top it pays to start at the top.

SHTCA was a finalist for the Electrolux Hospitality Institution of the Year 2017 (Regional Asia) Award presented at the World Gourmet Summit in Singapore at the end of March this year, as recognition for its exemplary achievements and dedication to excellence. This is a testament to SHTCA’s quality as an institution and proof of this recognition in Asia.

Training facilities are second to none, with professional commercial kitchens, standalone Patisserie and Garde Manger demo kitchens, “Bon Appetit” fine-dining restaurant, an al fresco cafe “Bar 91”, a cocktail Mixology Lab and Event Management facilities. Students also have hands-on experience in a mock-up Hospitality Training Suite and front office, developed in October 2013, in partnership with Holiday Inn Resort Penang, again a first in the nation.

SHTCA currently partners with Equatorial Hotel and renamed this as “Equatorial Suite”.

KDU Penang University College is a member of Paramount Education, a fully integrated provider that offers quality education from primary and secondary, both local and international, through to undergraduate and post-graduate levels, as well as executive and professional development programmes.
